Josh Stephen jumps to Reading?

De La Cruz and Trejo in Lakewood...I wouldn't have picked those two guys off the GCL team to jump (necessarily). I'm very surprised to see Listi in AA. Abrahan Gutierrez is a genuine prospect along with Marchan--interesting to see how they will split time. Parkinson and Rosso are placed aggressively at Reading. Pipkin and Santos make the jump to Lakewood!

Matt Winkleman suggests the Stephen assignment's not likely to last. Given how little he accomplished last year, I can see why.

I was surprised about Listi, too... unless the club believes that an older guy at 1B/corner OF in Reading really needs to tear the cover off the ball, and an .819 OPS isn't what they're looking for (think 1.000 or better). We've all seen a lot of older guys in that role, at Reading, who prove to be mirages. So it looks like Listi, or Darick Hall, will have to just blow folks away to force a promotion... something like a repeat of the Hoskins-Cozens axis from 2016.

It's all in all quite interesting. Some very aggressive promotions; other guys handled very conservatively (Haseley, for example). I suspect they have their reasons.

Jim Peyton has listed the three rosters that have been released on phuturephillies.com. He also provides some "informed" speculation about what the Clearwater roster is likely to look like.

I guessed at a CLW roster above. I'll go over to Jim's and compare...pretty close.

Grant Dyer, Kelan Kilgore, Nick Fanti missing from my pitchers. Fanti obviously should be there if healthy. He doesn't have Pelletier highlighted, and he was better than Aklinski in WMPT.

If Pelletier is hurt, that probably created the spot forDe La Cruz where the promotion seems aggressive. Fanti pitched in Australia (only so-so results) so they may be holding his innings down a bit and waiting for the inevitable opening by May.

And I also think some of the missing pitchers at the upper levels are pitchers that will shuttle on and off rosters to effectively give them a larger roster limit. As the majors continually limits innings for starters (and thus needs more relievers), the minors will follow suit. The days of starters going 150+ innings below AAA are probably gone. Brett Myers threw 175.1 innings in Low A when he was 19 years old. I can't see that ever happening again.

If Jim is right on his CLW roster, Markham, Pelletier, and Ortiz are all missing. We know Pelletier is injured (DL), wonder if the others are, too?

Just saw an unconfirmed report on phuturephillies that Ortiz is indeed injured.

The following AA/AAA level pitchers are all currently unrostered:

Eshelman, Windle, McGarry, Tols, Viza, Taveras, Singer, Rivero, Liebrandt

Are all of them hurt, too?

I just realized Pedro "The Barber" Beato didn't make the cut for the IPs. Sad, he's such a good guy, and quite the character. I'd love to see the Phils hire him just as a good will ambassador for the minor leaguers.

That's too bad about Beato. Les (who doesn't seem to read or post in any thread other than his own for one month a year) was hoping he'd get a shot with the big club (which I think he did once, a few years ago).

Surely he'll find another AAA or indie gig if he wants to keep pitching. Or, if he wants to live in Florida full-time he might want to start a shop!
