I know we didn’t have the money this year to do something like this, but wish the Phillies would look into deals like this in the future. You get a talented guy on a 1 year deal (lowering risk). The player is motivated to sign a big contract m, and if he has a good year you QO him meaning you either get a draft pick, get him for one more year, or get him for cheaper than you would on a multi year deal.

Tell me again why St. Louis always receives competitive balance picks? i saw on the other site, their gross income was 7th in the league. is this the same every year? if so, someone should look into this.

Ozuna has a QO attached to him this year so the Cardinals will receive a pick. I would not want him this year on one year deal - he is not the piece that will add value. Maybe if he were a pitcher with something to prove on a one year deal.

It''s like this every year. The teams which play hard ball with the commissioner and their fellow owner always win. The Phillies have lost so much over the years, as much because they are the loyal boy scouts kissing the commissioner's ring as because they had so many years when they spent so little and because their approach to baseball-side management has, over the years, seen too many bad decisions driven by bigotry, nostalgia, and being one step behind the teams which are close followers of the successful innovators. We have traditionally been the 'for the good of baseball' and 'the way the game should be played' organization. We need people at the top with sharper elbows.

Great post. I agree. It's time to start looking out for the Phillies first, and "baseball" second. I don't mind supporting baseball, but let's try to win as our highest priority.

What does this mean for Castellanos? After watching Franco at 3B, how much worse would it be to get him to play 3B? I know it won't happen, just dreaming about his bat in the Phillies lineup.

If you read the recent articles about JT Realmuto you also saw that the Phillies' arbitration offers, including the one to Nola last year, were determined by MLB.

The Cardinals are in the 24th-largest market in baseball. You'd have to do away with that as part of the calculation. Which would probably mean punishing several other teams, and also rewarding cheap, tanking or poorly-run large-market teams, by going to a revenue-only system. The better fix would be for other small-market teams to run their business as well as the Cardinals. And the big-market teams too!

Moreover, the Braves will not QO Ozuna next winter. They cannot, since he was QO'ed this winter, and a player may only be subjected to that one time in his career. Ozuna will be an unrestricted free agent.

That stinks actually. Yeah, I know it's perfectly legal and it makes eminent sense for teams to do this. But, it just isn't right. After he proved all he needed to prove at AAA in 2014 and was the Cubs best player in Spring Training in 2015, he deserved to be on the team on Opening Day.

I believe Franco's grievance was filed after Bryant's, does that mean it remains outstanding? Not that he has a chance of winning (especially now). Being non-tendered also makes it almost moot, unless there would have been back pay damages.

They should just change how a service time "year" is defined but both sides have their reasons not to want that.

I hope the Cubs don't trade him before the season starts.

MLB needs age-based free agency coupled with better arbitration (one that would give Realmuto $20 million on a formula dictated by advanced stats like WAR).

If all players were free agents at age 28, or something like that, there would be no need to manipulate service time.

Astros have hired Dusty Baker. Nightengale says it's just a one-year deal (with option/buyout), which I guess makes sense given the circumstances/lack of GM.

Looks like Buck is going to get shut-out even with three unexpected openings.
