The only good thing about this is that the Phillies signed my buddy PJ Forbes to play 2B at AAA that year and to work with Utley. BTW the report then was Utley was a better 1B than at any other position at that time, but they wanted him to try 3B.

I think Cesar is a bargain on that contract. He was a good, not great, probably not even very good, Phillies players for multiple seasons -- one of the very few reliable positive WAR position players. I think he got a bad rap and was often scape-goated for being part of Phillies teams which wee sorely lacking in talent.

I agree. Cleveland got a really good deal here. He has put up 11.3 WAR in 5 seasons, I would have happily beaten this deal to bring him in as a utility player or infield flex guy. Even the last 2 years, which are his worse, are better than this deal frankly. Not really sure why someone didnt offer him more than this, but maybe he took this in anticipation of having a clear starting spot (not sure what Cleveland's 2B options are).

His last two years are 1.4 WAR and 2.5. He should have been able to find more than this, and in fact I wish it was with the Phils as he was a very solid, if unspectacular, player. He made some silly mistakes in his first couple seasons but that lack of concentration has long since past.

The funny part (or sad) is that I am not even sure that Kingery, Didi or Segura are better. None of them are exactly putting up great numbers, I would have rather had all of them. Kingery in particular is really questionable to me as so far in his ML career he has 3 good months, 2 average ones and 7 bad ones.

This does bring up the question of whether we should have retained Cesar for this amount and then had $8 million more to spend on other things like Betances.

We would still non-tender him technically, but once that happens it is fairly common for a player to stay with the team that non-tendered them. There might be animosity towards the team from the player, of course, but most of the times a non-tender is simply a signal that the player's value on the market is less than his arbitration value. In other words, business.

I wouldn't say it is "fairly common." It is "not uncommon." And it's usually for players where the range is smaller, like a guy who was maybe going to get $7 million comes back for $5 million. The bigger the payday missed, the harder the feelings.

Anyway, we can't even afford him at that price. This really goes back to the "trade Segura" argument. A team with anyone providing 2.0 WAR at $6 million and $8 million to spend elsewhere is probably better than one with Segura providing 3 WAR at $14.5 million - and we don't even know if he'll do that. I'm still not convinced you couldn't throw Josh Harrison and Brad MIller out there every other day and get your 1.0 WAR from each of them for $2 million.

But, as we've now seen, even that cost savings + our remaining CBT room wouldn't have bought Ryu. Or one of the top 3B. Keuchel maybe.

I think if Cesar as a completely neutral player, neither liked nor disliked. Nobody ever expected him to replace Utley, and the desire to replace him with Kingery is nothing against him, just common sense based on age, ability and service time. When he was still mostly just an OBP guy who made baserunning errors he caught some flack but he's been a solid major league player for us. Before he got hurt last year he seemed headed for the All-Star game but never really came all the way back.

Well we had no shot at this guy I guess.

The New York Mets have reached a one-year deal with right-handed reliever Dellin Betances, sources confirmed to ESPN.

The deal is worth $10.5 million, but Betances could earn $13 million if he appears in 70 games. There is a player option in 2021 and a vesting player option for 2022, sources told ESPN's Jeff Passan.

Luis Robert signs the latest pre-majors long term deal for a prospect with the White Sox. 6 years/$50 million minimum. Could be 8/88 with club options.

The price is going up on these deals, especially the options that take away free agent years.

They released Tayron Guerrero to make room. I don't think i'd take him over anyone on the current 40 man (except maybe Cole Irvin), but he'd be a great power-arm lottery ticket to roll the dice on if he clears waivers.
