2018 Trade Deadline rumors/speculation

These maneuvers make me think the biggest improvement that could potentially come on the non-pitching side would be Crawford winning the SS job back. Seeing a 700+ OPS and good defense from Crawford would make everybody better. Not sure he can do that, but Kingery probably cannot. The Athletic had an aside that Crawford has some sort of shoulder injury early in the season that led to throwing errors and the hope is that is now OK along with the broken arm.

For a young club, all these rumors suck. Adding questionable veterans does nothing to really help the team and basically just conveys to our young players that they aren't good enough. Getting Manny would have been different and most likely would have fired up the team because there is no doubt/question about the quality of player Manny is and what he would have brought to the table. Hopefully Kapler can keep this team and the young guys believing in themselves and they play like they have been playing prior to this little swoon.

I don't have a problem with this team trying to get better short-term as long as they don't trade away too much or supplant a deserving young player. I don't think Kingery, Crawford and Knapp are necessarily in that category right now. Kingery should probably be in AAA, Crawford hasn't stayed healthy long enough to find any sort of footing. And I'm not sold on Knapp as a member of the 2019 team despite his promising bat/OBP.

An OF might be different, though I hardly think Roman Quinn's spot is sacrosanct, he will have a chance to make the playoff roster no matter what. I don't believe the Phillies would bench Williams

None of the guys the Phillies have been associated with are questionable, they're all .800 OPS 20 HR type players or defensive depth.

I wasn't saying it's easy for a coach to succeed in this, I was saying you don't trade for a player so that player can teach your existing players how to hit. You trade for a player. You hire a coach. It is folly to try to combine the two.

It was a forearm strain that put him on the DL 4/28.

5 throwing errors in his first 20 games. Oblique injury was a couple of years ago. Then when he came back he was playing mostly 3B so that did not help him get comfortable on defense anywhere.

Who knows whether it was bothering him. It is actually a decent reason why they would have Kingery at SS instead of Crawford if it meant fewer throws (not just ground balls but on relays too).

Pujols is a good trade candidate as he is one of many in a race for a 40-man spot. We have lots of time on Seabold. I've seen him pitch live. I wasn't terribly impressed, although having moved through the farm quickly, he has time to stay in place for a year and catch up to league.

Ah, ok, that is why I was confused, you made it sound like the Athletic revealed some injury we didn't know about. I like Crawford but like I said it's kind of a lost season. He didn't deserve to get Wally Pipped by Kingery but then he got hurt again so it didn't matter. He had 25 games at SS (most of them in April) and 11 at 3B. He only played 12 games between the two injuries, not long enough to get comfortable at any position (though he did have the sweet OBP).

That is the theory anyway. Then he was bounced around though he did start to hit for a bit of power when he came back.

Probably a lost season. But thinking they could just put him back at SS or platoon him with Kingery would have the potential to help both the defense and the offense down the stretch. Did not play GCL this morning. Maybe Clearwater tonight for JP?

I would not trade Pujols for Ramos, just wouldn't do it. This is a guy we dreamed on, followed, and had real aspirations for...and now he is doing just what we always hoped he would do, which is hit consistently. This is a potential 5 tool player, he always had the power, arm and speed to excel, it was his hit tool that was questionable.

Now, at 22, he is hitting .300 [and no SSS, he has been hitting since Day 1] and looks to be a guy we can now dream on, follow and have real aspirations for again.

This was always my concern after missing a once in a lifetime opportunity to acquire MM, it would be that the team would overpay for a guy not nearly as talented in order to keep the phan base interested. Seabold and Stephens are fine, but would not move Pujols.

Maybe its because I am in SoCal and get [have] to see and hear about Machado close up but from what I see, only Trout and maybe Betts are better all around players. I believe the Phils would have won the East and had a great chance to get to the WS with him.

He is a very special player.
