Best prospect in the deal is a 23-year-old reliever who just got promoted to High A. Probably similar in value to a guy like Seth McGarry that we got last year. In other words he basically came free (or for the $4 million they picked up).

For that price I would have taken a chance on Hamels. Might have gone 6-man rotation for a while and dropped whichever pitcher was not doing well by September.

I agree that the light suddenly going on in the heads of both Franco and Williams suddenly makes our everyday lineup very strong: 5 guys (Hoskins, Herrera, Santana, Franco and Williams who have 20+ HR power). I really do not think we should be looking for a "platoon" with Williams. Let him play every day. If there is a need for a defensive replacement in late innings, make it Quinn. Escobar still interests me because he can play multiple positions and I could still see us trying ot pick up a LH reliever. But now our needs our minimal. Wow has this team jelled.

Or Whit Merrifield‘s numbers. I think they might like his bat and the ability to play both IF and OF too. We could use a good bat guy for the bench that plays multiple positions.

Merrifield still has a couple more years under the Royals' control so he would be very, very expensive to acquire. No reason for the Royals to move him unless they get blown away by a trade offer. I am not convinced that one among Kingery, Crawford or Valentin cannot reach his numbers within the next two years. He would be too expensive for my taste.

Well put. Hamels left on a very high note. Most fans’ expectations (including mine) would probably have been unrealistically high.

Merrifield will cost more than Escoobar but KC may be ok moving him due to his age (29) and he may not fit their rebuild timeline. He is also more likely to fit the Phillies game plan, he is a higher OBA hitter than Escobar. He helps the team now and will do so for the next few years so why not use prospects for this purpose? We should be using prospects for controllable MLB players niw as our window is open.

NY Post says Phillies have even inquired about Galvis. No thanks, but a defensive upgrade at SS could have just as big an impact as an offensive upgrade.

They're probably gonna have to pick, assuming they don't acquire two position players. Do they want a defensive SS, and IF bat or an OF? And if the latter is it for defense/depth or extra offense? The bigger the bat or the more flexible the player the less of an upgrade the glove is, probably. But no point in swapping someone like Jones for Williams defensively if you downgrade offensively at the same time.

I'm excited about Quinn but hesitant to rely on him.If he gets hurt again in August you are out of luck whereas if you acquire someone and Quinn is also productive, you've got both.

Judge will be missing some time with a wrist injury. I wonder if this might affect the price of Jones and others the Phillies are looking at if the Yankees may now be on the market for another bat, particularly in the outfield.

Interestingly, Pivetta has 9 strikeouts in the first 4 innings tonight. I think he will hang in the competition for stating but may end up replaced in the rotation for awhile. We will see.

Moustakas to Brewers for a price slightly higher than we gave for Cabrera. And Merrifield off the market. So it appears we made our choice as all the various options were leaving the table.

Next few days will likely have lots of relievers moving. I suspect we will get one. Whether it is an expensive controllable arm or a cheaper rental is an open question.

I think the Moustakos deal makes Klentak look good. Cabrera has a cheaper contract, is a switch hitter, has a higher OPS this season and has more position flexibility. I think Kilome is cheaper than Phillips/Lopez.

(Obviously I am exaggerating). But very strange that we would be interested in him. Although, I guess, he would be power off the bench.

According to two major league sources, Cleveland and Philadelphia have been among the most aggressive in inquiring about Gallo.

I was just coming to post that. The DMN writer talks about how his overall OPS is better than Santana's, but yeah, he'd just be a bench piece (but with upside/control - heck, he's younger than Franco or Hoskins). High OBP player, power, strikeouts - certainly fits. Reports have been that they want a lefty bench bat. Makes sense to some extent, that's Santana's week side and Hoskins/Kingery/Franco all RH.

I think the Cabrera acquisition has probably cooled our interest (if there was any to begin with) in Gallo. I certainly believe we may have inquired about him at one point, but he really doesn't fit our team that well. Mainly a 1B, we have 2 of those. And Cabrera is better v. righties than lefties, so he's improved our offense vs. righty pitchers already.
