He says not Harper, then mentions players who currently are struggling who probably wouldn't interest anyone, like Murphy and Gio G. Here's his list of potential trade bait:

I imagine they would only want to get rid of players that would not be a part of the core moving forward or that can be easily replaced.

Then you have Warren Buffett, who set up nice trust funds for his kids and is giving the rest away.

No one knows what the Phillies offered for MM and no one knows why the O's accepted the Dodgers' offer. Right now does it matter? I don't believe that MM would put the Phillies any further into the PO run. So far this season its been the pitching that has carried them. They seem to be able to generate enough offense even without MM. Bringing a player over from the AL and having them produce up to past levels is not a cinch. MM doesn't know the pitchers but, through scouting, they know him. The advantage goes to the guys on the mound.
As for where he signs this off season, we should just sit back and let things play themselves out. Money counts and Middleton has it. If MM sign with NYY, so be it. I doubt that the Dodgers will get deep into the mix. They have serious cap restraints facing them. Like now, they need pitching and really can't do much since they are up against the SC. If anything, their need for pitching is going to grow for next season. Using their CS for a position player that they don't need seems senseless.

They also have to re-sign Kershaw, potentially, though that might actually save them AAV (at the expense of years) if both sides just agree to renegotiate more years.

According to Cots, unless Kershaw opts out after this season, his next two years are set at $34.571and $35.571.

It may be unlikely he'd opt out but it really depends on how the market compares to last year. If it's more of a free-for-all someone will be ready to pay him. Either way, I don't think it would be that hard for him to get a three or four-year deal that gives him a little more money and a lot more security, particular if it's just a re-negotiation with the Dodgers.

I guess we will root for him to not opt out.

I am not so sure he's actually a step down from Pivetta and I also think the lefty with playoff experience would not be a bad thing, including against the Braves in September, and especially if they aren't going to get a lefty reliever. But I doubt they are too serious about him - certainly not to where they'd outbid the Cubs. Given the $ involved the goal would be to steal him. "Could be" contains no reporting at all, not even a rumor. It's just based on earlier interest and the obvious fit

Maybe in a roughly equal deal the Rangers would do Cole a solid and send him home. Of course the Rangers also have any number of relievers available.

I think Klentak is doing just what he did in free agency, he is going to take what the market gives him. Even the coyness about Quinn coming up tomorrow is part of it. Is there a deal they could complete tomorrow for a bat instead? Probably. Do they have to? Nope.

Two of the offensive spots that the pundits thought the Phillies needed to improve, 3B and RF, now have guys with .800 OPS. The bullpen also has been outstanding lately. With Quinn and Crawford soon to arrive to reinforce the bench we might not see much action by Klentak unless he can get a really good deal. I am pleasantly surprised. Kapler gets a lot of credit in my book. Klentak too, the organization has really changed in the last couple of years.
