Remember all those rumored returns for players such as Schilling, Rolen, and Abreu. Well, maybe not so much for Abreu. I got all excited for the reported return only to see the actual deal fall short of what we had been talking about.

My gut feeling is that I'd love to make a trade for Machado but the reported package being discussed of late seems like way too much to pay for a rental of a few months. I am torn.

Luckily for me, I am not the one who has to make the decision. There is a case to be made that the Phillies may have to move some good prospects just to not face losing some to the rule 5 draft. Better to make deals now than lose players in the off season. Of course, the players traded might not be the ones who would have been lost, but being gone might open space on the 40 man roster for someone who otherwise would be lost.

I also remind myself how we absolutely yelled no to any potential trade of Dom Brown and a few others over the years, who never amounted to much. Prospects are still prospects until they prove themselves in the majors over a period of time.

Green and Moniak make sense as trade pieces. Listi doesn't have much value. I'd miss Green; he's a great story.

I thought the Orioles would get at least two pitchers in any deal for Machado.

I suppose the one reason the outlandish rumor might be true is that no team is likely to beat it. That would explain why the window's not still open (if that is in fact the case - I didn't realize the 'handshake' source was Barstool Sports. But that guy is standing by his story).

And Morosi implies Medina is the best player any team has offered.

For a rental, it is outrageous. The Yankees won't deal their Top 10 prospects - there's something to learn there.

I don't consider Medina our #2 prospect, I'm not sure he's better than Morales, for example, or even De Los Santos.
Good A ball pitchers are something we have plenty of in the system.
Medina was a $70K signing, one thing the Phillies do well is find and develop LA pitchers.

Gamboa may be our 4th or 5th best LA IF (Gonzalez, Guzman, Garcia, Brito, Torres), not to mention our draft picks like Maton, Holmes, Simmons.

Franco may be turning the corner, but his fielding is a question even if his bat turns around.

These three would be an expensive rental, anything more would be a gross overpay.

True though the Yankees have less need (9 more wins at the break, almost guaranteed wild card), fewer holes (not really needing Machado) and real luxury tax concerns (resetting). There was never a huge reason for them to make a good offer for Machado. The bigger question is what are others (Dodgers, Brewers) offering.
