That Baltimore Sun story suggests the Phillies will not get Britton in a package, will have to be a separate trade. His value could get even higher if he continues to pitch this well for the next 10 days, whereas they want to move Machado before that.

Machado saying his thank yous on Oriole radio broadcast after game. Feeling is this was it for him in Baltimore, he will be traded before the 2nd half starts...but probably after the ASG.

Think its going to be a difficult 2-3 days for all of us who are hoping against hope that this comes to fruition. I will certainly keep every abreast of any Dodger news I hear, they seem confident but guess we will.

I agree that no deal for Machado is going to happen until after the All Star Game. It is very likely that it will not happen before Wednesday in respect to MLB and the All Star Game. It could be that they are very close to a deal or even have agreed with a team on a trade.

Machado hit his 24th home run today. If the Phillies do land him for the remainder of the season, I think we will see a significant uptick in the offense. Not only will his bat in the lineup add significant production, I think he can raise the performance of others in the lineup. While I don't really like a rental situation, I will enjoy it for the remainder of the year. I trust the front office to know the prospects in the system and to not make deals that will cause a set back to the team being a contender in the upcoming couple of years.

My dream is that Machado signs in the off season with the Phillies and becomes an anchor of the lineup for years to come. I am not as high on Harper and would not see the Phillies signing him if they can sign Machado. I would like to see them sign Machado and then continue to build the system for a mid-season trade with LAA in 2020 for Trout, who happily signs a long term extension at the time of the deal.

May not have any effect either way but Medina getting lit up today in Future's Game. Also, Showwalter admitted that MM was pulled because of what is about to transpire. His basic comment was "lets face it, we all know whats going on and he would not have come out weeks ago."

Well Eflin had the blister on the 7/3 start and yet made the 7/9 start. Some would think that if he had a serious blister issue he would not have made the 7/9 start. With the days off with the ASG maybe they just put him on the dL now to not miss a start and to get the rotation set for the second half in the order they want and they still have De Los Santos available to take the start. Maybe his blister got worse after the 7/9 start.

What I would call "wild-eyed" speculation? Just the fact that so many people are gullible enough to believe such things, and they don't need to be encouraged - thus the reference to the moon landings. For some reason, I'm feeling particularly intolerant these days about crazy conspiracy theories and incomprehensibly gullible people. Not sure why - it may have something to do with existential threats.

Gotcha Julio. The world has gone is many different directions that I never thought were possible. I am guilty of spending a lot of mental energy trying to make sense of the working of the Phillies with a very incomplete knowledge of what the decision makers are taking into account. It is a fun diversion for me from thinking about the existential threats.

I hear you. The fact that we appear to be a legitimate contender is a gift to me right now - a much-needed distraction from wondering whether a move to Hobart would make sense.

I still think they might go after a starter, especially if he's controllable. You can't tell me Pivetta, VV and Eflin are all sure things in the short-term going forward, let alone in Game 4 of an NLDS series (realizing how rotations set up for those vary wildly). Plus if you get a starter you potentially improve the bullpen, whether it's sooner or later.

Now that he's on the 40 you have to figure De Los Santos will pitch in relief in September too (barring trades, of course).

SShhhh..CD, SShhhhh... quiet about romero. i think he is working his way to the big leagues quicker than we think. he has really settled into AA with his last 6-7 starts. the phils are giving up more than enough. Don't bring him into the picture.

It's almost mid-season and the Phils are in first place. Sounds pretty good to me!

Even better, it's past mid-season. Only 67 games left. Phils currently on pace to win 90 (90.396 to be exact). If they play .500 ball the rest of the way - obviously not OK at this point - they'd land between 86 and 87.

Is Manny worth two wins? Three? Will a reliever add one or two?

Also, they went 9-5 in July.

If you trade for MM, you trade for him as a rental, not to get a head start in signing him.
And you pay a rental price, no more.

It's different for players who grow up in an organization, from the minors to 6-8 years in the majors, they live here at least half the year, they have friends throughout the organization and ingrained loyalty - that's a strong reason for Philly teams to grown and resign their own, you know them better and you have a much better shot at retaining them.

Even if MM went to a WS with the Phillies, it wouldn't make him easier to sign - he'd see the Yankees or Dodgers as the same chance of success in 2019. He has no built in pull to this city and will make his decision the same way he'd make it if he didn't play here two months - money, location, team, family preference.

The reality is that there are only a handful of teams that could afford to sign Manny. Dodgers, Yankees, Phillies, and maybe one or two random others, some of whom do not need a 3B or SS. So a 2-month stay on a team in contention could really make it easier to sign him next season. If he is comfortable in Philly the team will have an advantage signing him.

It is not a big reason to make the trade now. Filling a hole in the weakest part of the lineup is. But it is also not nothing.
