I’m calling this now:

Manny will get traded to the Phillies. In reading the latest piece on MLB TR it looks to me like the Phils are absolutely in the best position to give the Orioles what they are looking for without really damaging the future.

It is said that what the Orioles are looking for is high end, preferably top 100, close to the majors pitching prospects. Apparently, that is not going to happen – none of the interested teams that have such a player appear to be ready to part with them. As a result, it would seem the Phillies are the next best thing – in AAA there is de los Santos, Ranger Suarez and Cole Irvin, all of whom are pitching well and have pretty good Peripherals, although of course none in the top 100. In AA you’ve got Jojo and Kilome who are performing decently or better, both with very good potential. On top of that there is also Lively, Seabold and Eshelman and of course Medina and others if they want to dip down lower than AA (even excluding Sixto).

With four out of five starting pitchers in the clubs rotation being 25 years old or younger, we could afford to give away at least a couple of these guys to get Manny, and if he walked you’d be ok, though it is less than ideal, obviously.

The theory that the O's can get more for him if they move faster probably doesn't hold true if they currently don't like the offers, though I realize the pace could pick up fast post All-Star Game. Are the Delaware/NJ casinos taking bets on what day he'll be traded, as well as to which team?

I'd give them a package including some of Irvin, Eshelman, Suarez, Lively, Kilome. I would not give them Delossantos. I'd give them 2 from that group and a much lesser prospect. Like Suarez/or Irvin/or Kilome and Eshelman or Lively, and a lesser prospect.I look at what we got for Giles and Lee, who were far more than rentals and that seems a fair offer..

Lee wasn't "far more" (he was traded in the off-season of his walk year) than a rental, plus as we know it was a salary dump, but I'm with you.

You also have to consider that Britton might be involved. Not that a struggline high-paid closer adds a ton of value.

I haven't seen anything about whether the O's want to include $. Most teams probably don't want them to.

Yes, that makes Lee far more than a rental. It is a full season vs two months and the acquiring team gets a comp pick if they don't sign him, which we won't get if we can't extend Machado, since it was a mid-season trade. Those two factors taken together make a BIG difference. The trend has been away from top prospect or huge multi-player return for even top rental players. Doesn't matter if Lee was a salary dump; his trade value was his trade value. He was an elite starting pitcher at the time -- not quite Machado value, but close.

Well, it's semantics. YMMV. I'd say "more than a rental." "Far more" would be Oswalt (1 1/2 seasons of control) or Pence (2 1/2) or, more recently, Verlander (2 1/2, though not even a half really). But all those of examples only support your point.

If the market is what it should be the Phillies should have a great shot. If another team wants to pay above market value, they'll shrug their shoulders.

Well when you look at the Phils current lineup with both Williams and Franco starting to show real improvement, the gaping hole at SS, whether it be Kingery or Crawford or Valentin is painfully obvious.

If the Yankees are offering Sheffield, I'd have to think they are the front runner. If the O's would take two of Eshelman, Irvin or Kilome, does that beat Sheffield? Again this is a rental. Lively is still on the DL and I value Suarez a bit above the other three. O's fans know they missed the boat keeping MM last year, so the O's front office is asking for the moon for 2-months of one of the top 10 players in baseball right now.

Another thing to think about is Franco is playing really well right now. MM goes to short, which sends Kingery to the bench or would they send him to AAA to play 2B everyday?????? Crawford will be back to one day. Kingery and Crawford had been highlighted as the future....

I'd love to see MM in Philly this year, but at what cost? Then again how many can't miss prospects have the Phillies held onto that never amounted to much and how many have been traded that had us crying that never amounted to much and how many came to the Phillies --- just look at the Giles trade three top pitching prospects with only Velasquez left to show three years later. So who knows?

The Yanks would have to be a little crazy to offer Sheffield. He's a very good prospect and they can just sign Machado after the season anyway. Plus they are solid at SS with Gregorius.

Well read the latest article in the Athlete where it states the Phils are "committed" to Kingery at shortstop. And a .240 BA, no power guy hardly is a model to play 3rd base in MLB. Read the tea leaves my friend, read the tea leaves.

Well if they did go for Machado and Baltimore had no interest in Franco, the best team to put on the field today might be Machado at SS and Franco at 3B. This assumes they trade either Kingery or Crawford in the Machado deal, but it is not at all apparent that Kingery or Crawford is a better 3B today than Franco when you combine offense and defense. They probably would both be later when they get their offense over 700 OPS, but maybe not today.

That's probably what you'd have to give up for Britton, not Machado.

Eshelman, Lively and Irvin are likely viewed as AAAA players by most of baseball.

The Phils managed to get to the All Star Break in first place- i think an honest assessment of the talent on the team is that the rotation is strong point, the offense needs help, and they need a reliable lefty in the pen. There seems to be some likelihood the rotation could regress, but bolstering other areas of the club could be the lift they need to give them a real chance to get into October. Plus, adding Machado now is a chance to get the butts in the seats they've been missing. In my gut if feels like something is brewing and there are people in the Phillies front office ready to flex their muscle again.

A deal for Machado is going to include Medina and/or De Los Santos along with guys like Suarez and Hall. If they have any confidence that they are willing and able to win the bidding on Machado in the winter, i'm ok with starting this push now instead of next year. If they don't think they can sign him, then i'd only give one of Medina or De Los Santos in a package.

That in no way means they don't believe he is part of the future.

You've been reading these same tea leaves for 2 years...they've dried up.
