Making the show for Cozens is a good first half of the season. At that point he'll be the next guy up after an injury or get traded for some real value. I just don't see how this is inconceivable. Cameron Perkins put up a 557 OPS in AAA at age 23 (Cozens age last year when he put up a 719 OPS). Perkins had a 748 OPS the next year at age 24. Then 822 last year at age 25 and was in the show for a good part of the season.

Does anyone think that Cozens can't put up an 822 OPS this year? That might be close to his mid-line projection or even below that. There is no guarantee he will, but there is also a real good chance that he will. That is THIS season and it gives him a very good chance to make the show THIS season. In fact his biggest problem is 5 good outfielders ahead of him on a team that might only carry 4 for long stretches of the season. Thus he might need 2 openings to get a promotion, not just one.

Maas was as a year older and was a left handed batter hitting in old Yankee stadium with that short right field porch. He had 1.2 WAR in 300 pa. Maas home ops 983, away 811, total 903.
Hoskins has 2.0 WAR in 212pa, home ops 969, away 1.080, total 1.014
Hoskins is a bigger, stringer man, an inch taller and 30 lbs heavier. Maas’s Power was a one year Yankee stadium phenomenon his home/away splits really show that. Hoskins actually hit better on the road than at hitter friendly CBP.

As to not previously showing 40 HR power in the minors, who does? Prior to his age 24 season the most HR’s Ryan Howard ever hit was 23.

Is it ok to hope Cozens has a terrific season in AAA, but never gets called up because those in the majors are doing just as well and stay healthy thus the lack of a roster slot in Philly for him.

We'll see if Hutchinson has regained his velocity.
He's been durable, 160 IP (mostly AAA) in 2016, 159 IP (AAA) in 2017.
TJ surgery in 2012, but was in the majors in 2014-15.

2014: 185 IP 4.48 ERA/3.85 FIP 1.4/2.3 WAR (BR/FG)
2015: 150 IP 5.57 ERA/4.42 FIP -1.5/1.4 WAR

Slider was his out pitch in 2014, not so much in 2015
4 seamer at 93 was adequate, 2 seamer got pounded
Changeup was below average in 2014, improved in 2015.

He's been a starter his career, but might be the kind of pitcher who improves in the pen.
The two things that would work for him is a velocity uptick on the 4 seamer and depending on the slider, because it doesn't look like he's developed other effective secondary pitches.

Sorry to see Ruppy go. He hit the longest Phillies homer I believe I've even seen live at the ballpark. I thought he was the better backup to Alfaro, but who makes the best backup catcher is not something that can necessarily be gleaned from statistics. Heck, the bottom line may simply be who Arrieta and Nola prefer to pitch to.

Rupp's a good guy, and I hope he can be traded where he can continue his big league career. I guess that Ruppy's Puppies will have to don fish masks this year and become Knappy's Crappies.

Was hoping Eickhoff to 60-day and Hutchison added, but I guess there isn't much of a market for Rupp. Then again Texas seemed to be in the market for Joseph and Alvarez.

So in essense: Rupp, Joseph, Alvarez and 25 mil traded for Hutchison, Florimon and Arrieta

You can't put Eickhoff on the 60-day if he's not actually that hurt. That's union grievance type stuff.

I assume they will get something for Rupp, particularly if they're willing to throw in some cash. But they might also hope he clears, roster space is tight and he's not much of a long-term asset (i.e. he'll be 30 and probably non-tendered after this season just for financial reasons, especially given the way the game's going lately).

I think it's a good deal. It meets my criterion of extending at least a couple of years beyond the initial period of team control -- which the Phillies could have set up to control him for 7 years, now we control him for 9. A cost of $25 mill isn't huge given our current salary, just $4 mill against the salary cap -- we've paid more for veteran middle relievers -- which is why it would be far from a dead loss to sign 12 collegians who project as middle relievers in this year's draft and hope to get one or two good middle relievers from the group.

Milner's outing today seems to have paved his road back to AAA. Phils might be looking to trade Rupp for a LH reliever...decent value if they can get a competent guy.

A spare LH reliever seems easier said than done. Phillies haven't really had a steady one since Dieckman and Bastardo (who's available). Seems like they will keep Curtis too. With the revolving bullpen and likely 10-day DL use/manipulation I'm sure Curtis and Milner will both get their turns, regardless of who breaks camp (even if they just go with Morgan.

Of course if they are going to make another trade who knows what might be on the table. Package Rupp with someone, even? They only have 24 hours to trade Rupp though, is my guess (i.e. they will release him tomorrow to save the money, and other teams know that. But they could send cash in a trade too).

It's not the DFA process/time frame they are up against, it's the deadline where they are only on the hook for 25% of Rupp's salary. Granted, that shouldn't be a huge concern for them (especially if they'd rather keep him in the organization). But if they want to just set him free and save themselves $1.5 million that's the play. If they think he'll get claimed, of course, they're not even on the hook for the 25%.

The Phillies have seven days to dispose of Rupp’s contract. He could be traded, picked up by another team on waivers or released. If he clears waivers, he could be outrighted to Triple A. Rupp’s Phillies contract calls for him to make $2.05 million in 2018, but the Phillies would only be on the hook for a quarter of that if he is released by 2 p.m. Monday.
