If Florimon were to lose his job to say, Flaherty, they'd probably have to turn around and DFA him. But they could still go with Valentin and keep Florimon on the 40 but in AAA, or vice-versa. Which is to say, they probably want to have both of them available to the major league team this year, whereas Alvarez was not in that mix. But sneaking him through a good idea.
Well, I guess now we can argue about whether Eickhoff is reliable/durable, rather than if he's good. As with almost all these guys, hard to be good if you have to miss two months and/or pitch through nagging stuff every year. We'll see if someone can actually make it impossible for Eickhoff to get his spot back (but I doubt it, when you throw in other injuries).
