(I don't know what I think, I think you can just as easily argue you stick with the planned rotation, though you also don't want to save Strasbur for a game that might never be played.)

Well, I know what to think. Koufax, Bunning, Short, Gibson to name just a few that I remember, pitched big games on 2 days rest when their team needed them and yet Strasburg can't pitch on 4 days rest? I thought this was why they paid him 175 million, because he could be counted on to pitch the game that his team absolutely had to win.

If I was a member of the Nats I would find this very disturbing, lets face it the first thing that they thought about when the game was rained out today was that they could go Strasburg in Game 4. Wrong.

haha well history says you can't count on him! But it's also a different postseason, and a very different world of pitchers. I mean, seriously, most of those pitchers you named didn't even play in the league championship era, let alone the the wild card era.

if he really is sick and got lit up in the first inning he'd get ripped even harder. But considering they could probably use both Scherzer and Gonzalez in Game 5, he kind of has to be available.

Now that is why they are paying him $175 million and why he needed to stand up and be counted. Sports has so few moments where an athlete is truly challenged to separate himself from his peers and I felt SS was running from that moment simply because of the sniffles.

Oh, his teammates would have publicly supported him, its the publicly right thing to do. But for the Werth's, Wieter's and Scherzer's, guys who don't have many of these moments left in baseball, it would have been a major abdication of his responsibility. Because of a cold?

Good for SS to not only stand up and be counted but to deliver when said teammates needed him the most. Regardless of how his career goes from here he will always have this as a proud moment when he put his team on his $175 million dollar shoulders and carried them to play another day.

The Indians turn out to be this year's October paper tiger. Tito has gone from being the toast of Cleveland to the roast of Cleveland with Tribe players having to defend him.

It's certainly possible the team was covering for Strasburg but it sounded like a lot more than a cold.

That vagueness opened up Strasburg to heavy criticism, but it turns out he had a fever, chills and acute sinusitis. During his bullpen session on Monday, Strasburg felt weak and had no endurance. Even as late as Tuesday night, on the bus back to the team hotel he felt his chances of pitching were slim.
"Came in the other day and his face was the color of that carpet," Bryce Harper said, pointing to the green carpet in the visitors' batting cage.
The Nationals treated him the past few days with antibiotics, anti-inflammatories and fluid IVs and gave him a higher dosage through Tuesday evening.

We'll never know how he well he would have pitched if he had sucked it up and "played hurt," if he'd still felt that badly.

Game 5 between the Cubs and Nats has all the makings of a classic through 5 innings. I don't really like either team, but the game is going back and forth with a lot of subplots.

It's still really early but losing because your best starting pitcher turns in a horror-show of a relief inning is what wild card era baseball is all about.
