St Louis sent Mike Leake and $17 million to Seattle for Rayder Ascanio, who appears to be a mediocre SS prospect in high-A:

Seems like Leake could have been a decent fit for the Phils, given the low price. Leake isn't great, but he's been a durable innings eater, turns 30 in November, and with the money St. Louis sent is owed ~$46 million from 2018-2020.

Frankly, I was wondering if the Astros would play again in Houston for the rest of the regular seeason.

And yes, the Rangers sure came out looking like bad guys here and that was after MLB moved the Astros to the AL for the primary purpose of appeasing them.

At first, I thought they were being jerks. But I am now OK with their reasoning.

My next set of tickets for the Phils is not for ~ 3 weeks. I wouldn't want that game moved to tomorrow, or anytime this weekend.

Yeah there was an understandable kneejerk reaction to the Rangers but their logic (both for the fans and the slim wild card hopes) was sound. .

The rumor is that the Tigers would like prospects in return. The better the prospects, the more money that they keep. Is this a place where Middleton could use his $$$$ to take all of Verlander's contract and flip a middling prospect or two and get Verlander? IMO, why not push for it. JV is still good and only has two year's, though expensive ones, ($28M per plus an option year that most likely won't vest) left on the deal. He has had some health issues in recent years but manages to work through them and pitch good baseball. He's be an ideal guy for the younger pitchers to be around.

It might possible to get him to agree to come to a team he might not consider if that team guarantees his third, option year.

Verlander has made 170M in his career with another 56M guaranteed. Hes engaged to a supermodel. They bought a home worth 5.5M last year. The man has everything with just one thing missing. A World Series Ring. I could be wrong but im guessing the chance at a ring is more important then adding another 22M guaranteed to his already impressive career earnings.

In the off-season, maybe, by midnight tonight, almost surely not. Sounds like they won't get it done anyway. Tigers would prefer young major leaguers for him, and most of those guys can't be traded right now 'cause they didn't clear revocable waivers (or were never on them).

In the off-season you'd have to sell him on your plan, just like the Cubs did with Lester. Convince him he'll be pitching for you in the 2019 and 2020 playoffs, even if 2018 is stretch. But you couldn't do that today if there's a chance he can be on the Astros tomorrow.

Not to mention his supermodel soon-to-be wife would probably prefer that he be traded to a more glamorous city than Philadelphia where she can advance her career at the same time, think NY, LA or Miami where she can wear her skimpy swimsuits all year long and the Marlins will have new owners who may want to make some flashy moves (doubtful that the rumored fire sale will happen; Manfred strongly suggested he would put the kibosh on it).

Baseball players rarely live where they play anyway. And she's probably on the road more than he is. Sure, if the Yankees or Mets stepped up I'm sure that'd be appealing but when you have that kind of money Philadelphia may as well be a suburb of Manhattan.

With Williams already in the Majors, it is hard to judge the Hamels to the Verlander trade at this time. Looking at what Houston gave up: Perez and Cameron have the potential to be decent to pretty good Major League players. But Houston has a legit shot at World Series title. The Astros have been to the World Series once and that was 12-years-ago and they were swept.

This is the Phillies traded for Lidge type deal for them. Yeah it cost them, but they could win a World Series.

I'd have to say the Phillies got more - At the time Hamels was dealt, many of us though Thompson could become a solid no. 2 guy. We also fantasized about Alfaro becoming a 20 homer catcher and Williams was the icing on the cake. Eickhoff was the lottery ticket and Ascher was AAA filler. The Tigers sending $16 million equates to the Phillies taking Harrison.

david, i was one of those who was ecstatic when i saw thompson included in the trade. just don't know what the heck happened to his stuff. what a disappointment.
