Hey, I'll join the in the fun. I remember when we thought we had a treasure chest of 3rd base prospects all at one time. Do the names Kiel Fisher, Terry Jones [from Cal] and Juan Richardson ring anyone's bell? They ring mine. Richardson supposedly sprained his ankle badly while moving furniture down some stairs[I never believed it] and Fisher was rumored to be from a wealthy family and took baseball as a hobby. But he was a 3rd round pick and we were excited to sign him. As for Jones, worked hard, great attitude, just never made it.
And speaking of the ones that we SOOO wanted to sign but couldn't get them to put their John Hancocks pen to paper, who remembers Steve Doetch, Jason Cooper [went to Stanford and played football and baseball] and Lance Niekro. All 3 eventually signed elsewhere but we all spent more than a few weeks talking about them. I specifically remember the talk about Cooper, who was from Washington, having to be signed before he could step on the campus of Stanford U. We all knew once that happened it was over. It did.
Cooper eventually signed with Cleveland 3 years later and had some minor league success but never attained stardom. Still, we really wanted all 3 of these players. I am sure Squire [and yes I remember Matire Franco!] and fish remember these guys.
