So what's the compensation if the Leafs fall apart and protection kicks in.

Will have to wait and see, but most NHL protections are only for one year, and then are unprotected the next year. NBA is different where they tend to have more complicated protections year to year. Both first this year (Col and Edm) are 2025 protected, and unprotected in 2026.

Yes, this obviously means Risto is going nowhere this season and likely will be around for some part of next season too.

Good question on the compensation for the Flyers if the top 10 condition is triggered.

It now makes more sense for me why the Leafs would be willing to give up a conditional 1st in 2027 and a young player for Laughton, half salary retention, a 4th and a 6th. I think it is a good trade for Briere and the Flyers.

Flyers didn't need 2025 picks, they have 8 picks in right now would be the first 71. And (2) 5ths as well.

Now have extra 1st and 3rd in 2027

Risto was probably unmovable due to contract, Briere probably didn't want to retain for two more seasons. And without retention, doubtful there was a deal to be made. Could be dealt before the draft, next TDL or next summer.

Poehling will be UFA at next year's TDL. Hathaway will have remaining year, Seeler NMC expires summer of 2026.
So opportunities to pick up 2026 draft picks.

Think Briere has seen this as an incremental process, as young players push for jobs, you gradually move out "depth" veterans and open up spots. So if Bonk is ready to start by TDL, need to move out a D-man, etc.

with the amount of picks they now have, I would think two things could be more likely in the draft...they use the two lower first rounds to move to the 13-17 range of the draft or they package picks for a younger player who may need a change of scenery.

I don't think they will use all 7 picks.

Flyers recalled Abols and Lycksell and Andrae.

There was no one else to use the retention slot on anyway. It will open up again quickly if they still want to trade Risto (or anyone) next year.

Boston traded D Brandon Carlo to Toronto for C Fraser Minten, Philadelphia's 4th-round pick in the 2025 NHL Draft (previously acquired by Toronto) and Toronto's 1st-round pick in 2026 (conditional).

I'm not so sure, Rantanen had 3 ES points in 12 games in Carolina.
Maybe he'll do better in Dallas, but he won't be playing with MacKinnon.
Hintz is a good center, but he's not in the same tier.

Hintz is a star. Anyway, I'm not saying it isn't a seriously lavish trade/contract. But it's what legit Cup contenders who already have a core of both young and old stars do. And he's 28.

It's what you do when you've gotten close but no cigar.
However, if I'm going to give big assets and big money, it would only be for a franchise center or 1D.
Scoring wings are easier to find.
