Then they have to hope for lottery luck (either jump themselves or don't have someone else jump ahead of them).

My take was/is that Lemieux had 690 goals in 915 games. If he played 1487 games, that translates to 1121 goals. So, any drop makes me suspicious of the algorithm.

Well, if you want to say that Mario's .754 goals per game are more impressive than Ovi's .601 goals per game without considering anything else it's already a fact. But I don't know what's suspicious about the idea that it was easier to score goals in the other eras for reasons we've already discussed - goals per game were higher and save percentages were lower. Mario drops to .673 goals per game using this formula, while Ovi rises to .671. So what the stat says is Mario was actually just as productive a goal scorer as Ovi and vice-versa, with games played and era being what separates the gulf in their raw numbers. (Mario was still a more complete player in my book but we're only talking about goals here.)

I do not think you can have one, without the other.

My opinion is that Lemieux is a more productive goal scorer than Ovi, and Ovi has proven to be the highest scorer of goals in NHL history.

Well that's fine for you but what do Brent Flahr and Briere think? He was still a third-rounder, and a quasi-local kid, plus he's got the size to be a bottom six forward if that's how it goes. He can also stay in school another year before they have fish or cut bait.

Of course I hope they lose tonight.
