What are the logistics of signing him as far as not burning the contract year?

Also this note from The Athletic re Grebenkin:

Whether the Flyers give Grebenkin, 21, any NHL games this season remains to be seen, but their hands are slightly tied, as they’ve already used three of their four allotted post-trade deadline AHL recalls with Andrae, Rodrigo Abols and Olle Lycksell. Perhaps one or two games late in the season makes the most sense if he stays hot.

That would also apply to Kolosov I guess, not that they really need to see him again. Plus I'm guessing when there's an injury that limit doesn't apply.

Burning the contract year is an incentive to sign, not really an issue, Flyers aren't a cap strapped team that has to worry about the difference between one more ELC season or a two year RFA bridge deal.

Grebenkin probably needs another AHL season, he's only 21, 120 KHL games, plus 23g in KHL POs last season, but only 6 points. No need to rush him, I can see Grebenkin, Bump, Barkey, Bonk, Sotheran starting next year in the AHL.You sign some veteran patches you can flip at the TDL to make room for kids who've shown they're ready instead of rushing them.

It may or may not be moot anyway. Frozen Four doesn't end until April 12 and while Denver isn't a favorite this year they are also a team you don't count out (they were only third seed in the conference tourney).

Flyers season ends on April 17.

I think the idea would just be to give Grebenkin a little taste, and some time with the other Russian speakers on the team, before sending him back for the AHL playoffs, but then again they also have to make them first.

You mean Western Michigan? They're ranked 4th, so good chance they go deep into playoffs.

Not trying to step on the people looking for a certain number, but who are the targets outside of the lottery? Desnoyers?

The Tankathon mock draft currently says Frondell at 5 (Desnoyers 6 Eklund 7). Four of the top six picks are Cs, I would think that's what they do if they can.

Whatever the depth is or however they approach it, obviously still better to have the most shots at 1 or 2 and the highest pick. Doesn't seem like it's gonna be a problem now

I think it depends where they pick and who falls, I’d be happy with any of those guys in the 5 to 6 range. It seems like most sites agree with the top four players in this draft. I’m not sure if Hagans will drop out of the top four, he was preseason number one, he played on a line with two NHL ready wings and his stock has weakened. He is my prediction for the guy who’s drops on draft night and if available someone I’d also be happy with.

I’d also be interested to see what the Flyers do if they get the first. Do they go Schaeffer on defence or Misa at center. Or someone else?

If talent is similar, I'd always go with the true center, it's really hard to find elite centers.
Looking at PO team rosters, most have centers in the 35-50 point ES scoring range (excluding empty net points).
The top scorers, outside of McDavid, Draitaisl and MacKinnon are mostly wings.
If you build down the middle you can find scoring wings.

Top defensemen are easier to find later in the 1st rd or even deeper in the draft.

And is talent similar between Schaeffer and Misa?... especially relative to their positions?

i agree with you, I would like them to take Schaeffer as well if we are so lucky to win the lottery, I'm curious what the flyers would do though

Historically, probably Misa or Martone, but the Flyers have drafted differently recently.

Even if the Flyers were to win the lottery I would think they want and need the best available center.

That may open up the possibility of trading down a spot or two if there is a team that desperately wants Shaeffer.

I would love the Flyers to be in the position to draft Hagens.

I would be totally fine with Hagens at 4/5. Maybe not the most talented, but great player.

He was the consensus #1 pick before his season started but has fallen slightly as the process has played out.

I just hope they navigate it well if they decide to move slightly down - and that none of these guys share an agent with Gauthier, Buuium and Johansen.

He's also a year older than Schaefer, but he's a smart player.

Because he flatlined as a 3C who doesn't PK (not just here, also in Calgary).

His play in Calgary with 3rd line caliber wings has been pretty bad, suggesting he was carried a bit by playing most of his minutes with Tippett, TK and Michkov the last two seasons in Philly.

Keeping him probably would have required a $3-4M RFA deal, instead they took the 2nd rd pick and Pelletier b/c they have Cates and Poehling as bottom six centers.

They need top 6 centers.
