I disagree about Luchanko--he looks pretty ready to me...he defends, and on offense his speed is a real threat. They may not want him plying 3C or 4C though, so going back to juniors or to a college program may make sense. I donāt know if heās NCAA eligible after his AHL/NHL stint last year, though.
BTW, from Charlie today
"Can Martone still go to Flyers training camp despite the college commitment?
Some fans theorized over the past few weeks that perhaps Martone could have his cake and eat it too ā that he could both enroll at a college program and participate in Flyers training camp.
Yes, once Martone officially signed his ELC, he would lose his college eligibility. But what if he enrolled at a school, attended Flyers camp without signing a contract, and then only signed one at the end of camp if he earned a roster spot? If he didnāt make the team, he could just show up to his college a month late, maybe taking some online classes in the interim to avoid falling too far behind academically. Why not try to do both?
Per a team source, thatās not an option in this case. Porter Martone will not be at Flyers camp this September.
My understanding of NHL and college eligibility rules provides three reasons why this isnāt realistic or even likely permitted. First, to both attend camp and retain college eligibility, Martone would have to pay for all of his expenses if his stay at camp lasted longer than 48 hours, which it obviously would given his aim of winning an NHL job. Rookie camp and main camp usually lasts close to four weeks combined, so Martone would have to cover nearly a monthās worth of hotel stays, travel, food, and everything else. Thatās going to get quite pricey in a way that the much shorter development camp does not.
Second, a post-enrollment collegiate player is not permitted to ātake part in any outside competition (games or scrimmages) as a representative of a professional team,ā which would seemingly knock preseason games out of the mix, removing a key aspect of convincing the team of NHL readiness. Third, the player isnāt allowed to miss classes to attend such a camp. Thatās not a problem for development camp, which happens in the summer. But main camp comes in September, after classes have already begun."
