It is certainly true that as teams adopted analytic analysis of baseball the single biggest change is the realization that defense is more important than âold schoolâ baseball thought, particularly OF defense. (Along with the Moneyball idea and that OBP is much more important than believed). So I agree with using picks on high end defensive players, and as Rojas is showing, defense always adds some value, even if offense is well below average.
The other thing to remember is the key is developing players, not worrying to heavily about âfilling holesâ because some of these guys will be used in trades.
That said, there is logistical issues. If you draft CF 1-2 then you are going to be blocking the lesser one UNTIL the primary one succeeds at a level. You are kinda pre-deciding the order unless you are willing to have the secondary one jump a level (bad idea) or do a promote / demote if the primary pick struggles while the secondary one succeeds.
