He reports that Walding, Moore, and Casimiro have resigned minor league contracts with the Phillies.

Nunez and Therrien would be in addition to those already resigned. Pretty clear they chose Moore and his defense over Numata and he is probably the team's emergency backup catcher in AAA if the big club has an injury. I am fine with that. We also needed to make sure Grullon plays every day (likely in AA).

Walding is back because we lack 3B prospects in the high minors. I think Walding sees that and is a good half season in AAA towards at least finding a spot on our bench if they want a LH complement to Franco. I am guessing they also offered Casimiro a little extra money to stay. He is the type of LA prospect that just needs extra years to fully mature and it makes sense to give him one more year.

That's a reasonable assumption - because if they plan to add Walding to the 40-man before Monday, they would have just done that on the 6th of November, rather than signing him to a minor-league contract.

Not a big surprise, older prospect who had raw skills but never developed them.
That kind of gamble on skills is fine, just not in the first couple rounds of the draft.

Matt McBride is a Lehigh University ('06) Alumnus and Bethlehem Liberty HS grad ('02) who has put up outstanding offensive numbers in AAA over the last 5 years or so, but has not been able to carry his success to the big leagues. As a 32/33 yr old C/1B/OF he fits Klentaks's profile of a multi-position player. At one point he was thought to be a pretty solid defensive catcher, but his use at other positions seems to not have been consistent with that assessment. He's been a pro 11 years now and I'm pretty certain the Phils are not considering him for the big league roster unless there are injuries, but he's certainly a personal favorite. He was a monster his senior year at Lehigh, putting up a 1.150 OPS. If he plays for Lehigh Valley he'll find that his home games are within walking distance of both his college and high school alma maters.

I've been hoping the Phils signed him for the last 4 or 5 years, but he might be too old now to contribute (unless he pulls a Chris Coste).

Matt Eddy's latest blog post at Baseball America, reporing transactions from 12/12 to 12/22::

Signed: RHP Ryan Etsell (Evansville (Frontier)) | C Abraham Gutierrez (granted free agency from Braves)

confirms the Etsell signing, as well as the Abraham Gutierrez signing - neither of which has as yet been posted on the phillies web site transactions page.... but given that Eddy's information comes from MLB, we can consider it official even without MLBAM's keeping the transactions page up to date.

Fryer and McBride were confirmed in the Phils' press release yesterday. As yet, no official confirmation on Frazier or Rickles.
