A little odd but probably just chance and that it is harder to find left-handed pitching. We have not devoted a top pick there in recent years. And we traded Erik Miller for Yunior Marte and Miller would have made the top 30 list somewhere in the middle.

It is harder, the Phillies decided, without greater collaboration between scouting and player development. As they distanced themselves from initiatives implemented by the previous front-office regime, there was a tacit acknowledgment that different departments hadn’t just failed to work together; sometimes, opposing forces prevented the Phillies from having a functional development pipeline.

Earlier this month, the Phillies created a new position within the organization and hired Luke Murton as director of hitting. Murton replaces Jason Ochart, whom the Phillies hired from Driveline Baseball before the 2019 season but parted ways with in September. The Phillies will have him scout potential draft picks while overseeing the farm system’s hitting program.

Brian Kaplan, hired as the club’s director of pitching development before the 2022 season, worked as a coach in the majors but influenced what the Phillies targeted in amateur pitchers and how they emphasized it with farmhands. Kevin Long, the veteran big-league hitting coach, played a large part in the process this offseason to chart an organizational hitting plan.

But the Phillies are aware that, as an organization, coherent hitting development has been elusive. It is not a recent shortcoming. This has afflicted the organization for more than a decade — at least. It has spanned numerous philosophies and personalities on the scouting and development sides. They have chased trends in hitting instruction.

Bad news buried in the list unfortunately. Looks like NPG's knee injury was a torn ACL.

De La Cruz at #9 finally feels like the right place for him.
I hadn't thought much of McKinley Moore from what he showed last year, but based on how sharp he looked in his first spring game, #20 doesn't seem like a crazy spot to rank him.

I don't like that he's missing a year, but ACLs are pretty repairable with today's medicine. Hope he has a good winter season next year.

He'll be 19 when he returns, plenty of time to work on building strength, both throwing (opening up 3B as well as SS and 2B) and power. So if the operation goes well, I can see him bouncing back strong in 2024.

I thought they omitted him because of major league experience. That placement not exactly a ringing endorsement of Dalton Guthrie.830+ OPS in AAA and MLB experience and doesn't rate top 30 in a thin Phillies system?

Perhaps the last prospect list of the new season? Fangraphs only has 33 players on their list this year (which ranks players FV 35+ and above) which is a sign of the decreasing depth in the system unfortunately. 41 were ranked last year.

What stands out looking at this list is how heavily the organization is weighted toward A and rookie ball in the top 20 or so, which may reflect the changes of the last few years. Guys who used to be toward the top like Crouse have been pushed way down or graduated.

Conversely, outside of older players in AAA, there is little on the way the next couple years unless some young players surprise and blow through a few minor league tiers. On the other hand, most difference makers do just that, the light goes on and they end playing at three levels in one season. So that's something to look for this summer if the organization is going to do more than generate backups, RPs and second tier starters.

All prospect lists are weighted towards younger prospects simply because those players are evaluated mostly on tools and have not had a chance to wash out yet. I do not think our system is particularly strong in the lower levels. We are among the weakest in baseball in fact at those levels. Part of that is diminished international allocations and lost draft picks.

We have a below average system where the top 4 prospects are all in the higher minors. That is where our value is now. Painter, Abel, McGarry, and Rojas are all knocking on the door.

The changes in the past few years are more related to big velocity and spin on the pitching prospects we draft and sign. We are trying to get athletic hitters too rather than going too far towards hit tool only players.
