The Harris campaign may have made a critical mistake IMO.
When she started, the messaging was the future, middle class growth, opportunity, hope and change. Then she started mixing in specific policy proposals that reinforced those concepts.
What she did not do was talk about Trump. She ignored him and made the campaign about her vision for the country. The media followed suit and Trump dropped off the radar screen to the relief of many.
People connected to turning the page and moving forward, similar to Obama's messaging in 2008. Engagement and enthusiasm increased. Harris turned Biden's deficits in the swing states into small leads. Momentum was real.
Unfortunately, since the debate, Trump has successfully recaptured the media's attention and over the last month+ Harris has followed suit. The messaging has shifted to much more of an Trump-focused one which has left her policies and vision for the future dead on the side of the road.
This is what Biden tried to do before he bowed out: make the threat Trump poses to the country and his unfitness for office the major theme. It did not work and is not working now either.
Harris' closing argument needs to be focused on the economy and the future. People do not truly believe Trump will destroy the country and, for whatever zany reasons, they trust him more on the economy and immigration. That is what she had started to unravel before they mistakenly changed strategies. Trump's danger is real, but the voters are focused on other issues. They have two weeks; hopefully it is not too late.
