We currently have two hybrids. And I understand about range anxiety. But most of us simply don't do lots of long road trips. To the extent that we do, we mostly use the interstate system, which is pretty adequately covered by charging networks, even now.
Now, It could be problematic if you're planning to spend lots of time far from populated areas, and far from the interstate system; finding functional charging stations, at least for now, can be a problem under those conditions.
Personally... We're going to be in Sullivan County for a couple of weeks, beginning this weekend. (Yes, we have broadband...) I've looked at the charging system maps (I'm assuming that our next vehicle will be an electric, because for most of our use, a 200 mile range between charges is easily adequate), and it would be challenging. Even in Williamsport (where we'll be doing grocery shopping), it's limited, as of now. When we get to that point, I'll probably suck it up and install a home charger at our summer place (but obviously, not everybody would have that option). But yes, if you live in a place like that, a home charger is probably going to be necessary for quite some time. (On the other hand, you don't find a lot of apartment complexes in these rural areas, so not a lot of people who wouldn't be able to do home charging.)
