It seems that the one thing that improved the most about Moniak was his contact on the fastball. I feel like I've read that over and over.

Fangraphs itself is certainly fantasy based--they got into prospects to service the deeper leagues that drafted minor leaguers and kept them season to season. I wasn't trying to make a negative implication about the review; it was clumsy wording at best. I guess I was trying to say that I wasn't sure to what extent McDaniels and Longenhagen were relying on what they knew about the modified instruction themselves, or what they had been told by the Phils. I know that BBA at least is sometimes seduced by the team executives in terms of ranking prospects, and I don't know how much I should credit Fangraphs' independent knowledge of the new instructional techniques versus them just hearing from the Phils that "we're realy modernizing our hitting instruction going forward."

It may have started as a Fantasy site but they do a lot of regular baseball analysis that has nothing to do with Fantasy these days. I don't think I've ever read a Fantasy article on their site and I don't think I remember any of their podcasts talking about Fantasy Baseball in anything other than a throwaway comment.

They have an entire section of their website dedicated to Fantasy Baseball but on the home page you have to scroll down a significant portion of the page to see that section and in the first section there are three story links and only one is a Fantasy story. Maybe because the season is over Fantasy takes less of a precedence but they have produced 15 non Fantasy posts (Blogs/Podcasts and Chats) New Years Day and none were actually on New Years Day, including Posts on the Hall of Fame and one on a lawsuit between the city of Miami and Jeffrey Loria which can in no way be considered related to Fantasy.

I can't say how much McDaniels and Longenhagen have seen of the individual Phillies players and how much they are getting from Scouts/FO people but they do watch a lot of prospects in person all year round so I tend to give them the benefit of the doubt. As I mentioned previously Longenhagen used to write a lot about the Phillies specifically and I always found him to be overly negative on our prospects but hindsight has proved him right for the most part so I doubt hes just taking word from scouts that changes have been made without backing that up with either seeing the changes for himself or verifying with non Phillies people.

As prospect evaluators go I tend to find McDaniels and Longenhagen very thoughtful and thorough. I am happy that the Phillies have completely overhauled minor league hitting instruction as I don't think the current staff was working, Maybe these guys won't either and Almaraz just picked the wrong guys but its hard to argue that our minor league hitting wasn't a disappointment overall last year.

Before that he worked with Kieth Law at ESPN and the Ironpigs for a few years. He’s really done well for himself elbowing his way into the industry. If Carson Cistulli at Fangraphs could manage to get hired by a big league club, it won’t be long for Longenhagen to get the opportunity if he wants.

Brito and Gamboa are overrated, they haven't shown any improvement as hitters, with LA prospects, I figure 17-20 is physical development and adjustment to the states, by 21 they should be kicking butt. Pitchers may take longer to fill out and add velocity, but they usually make that big jump around 21-22, which is why you see these guys emerge in A ball then move quickly.

Muzziotti is too high right now, hasn't shown enough and isn't young for his level.
Marchan is too high, I might have Duran ahead based on power potential.
Requena shouldn't make any list.

Names and rankings seem right to me, I guess. Medina probably close, but could catapult to Top 50 if opens strong at Reading. Bohm's small-sample stats scare the heck out of me (low average and no power for an advanced college hitter playing against younger competition), but I know most folks on the board here tend to give him a pass. Fingers crossed on him.

Painful to see Angels' young Jo Adell at #6. We passed on his tools in favor of the safer Haseley.

Ouch, but you are right, Squire. Subtract Nola and the Phillies' first selections over the past decade have nothing to show. Hard to conceive a worse team in all of MLB, sad to say.

Let's see how Moniak and Haseley and Bohm look this year.
Randolph, stick a fork in him.
But my suspicion is some pitchers are going to surprise, this organization has done one thing well, and that is develop pitchers, even if we've traded a few away.

Ortiz is easily as big a deal as those three. I'll be watching his stats closely this year. I'm hoping he gets placed in CLW. Randolph's end-of-year performance gives a glimmer of hope. Garcia also a big deal.

I agree that their are a number of young pitchers who may step forward. Still, to be a good organization, we have to do well with the guys we fall in love with and pay huge bonuses to, not just have a few pitchers pop up. It was great to see how well Seranthony did last season, but serendipity is not enough to float the boat.

Why am I sad about not having Stephenson?

He's basically the same offensive player and as far away.

It’s closer than Puk-Moniak disparity but Stephenson was the other guy we were linked to when we picked Randolph. Stephenson is a catcher and I’d be stunned if anyone didn’t think he is currently a much more valuable prospect than Randolph.

To continue to beat a dead horse, while there may not have been an obvious Harper or Strausburg available to pick, they did miss on the studs when they had the picks and the international pool advantage.
