I had hope for Moniak until it was obvious he simply couldn't recognize a breaking ball

According to the Phillies minor league staff Moniak is hitting breaking balls better than he hits fastballs. His weakness was not being quick enough on inside heat.

That's not what I saw in the majors, he was chasing every low breaking ball and getting tied up with heat.

You can see the difference with Stott, Stott was disciplined, making hard contact, and it was just a matter of time before luck (i.e. BABIP) went his way. You can be patient with a young hitter who seems to have a clue.

Heck, when Mike Schmidt hit .198 as a rookie I knew he'd be a star, had the batting eye, when he hit it the ball felt it, it was just a matter of things falling into place.

With Moniak, I went from high hopes to lots of hops.

Kevin Long had Mickey adjust his approach by moving closer to the plate. That may have helped (even fixed) his swing, while also making him more susceptible to taking balls off the hands. Can't help but feel bad for the kid.

Details on Mickey's second broken finger of the year:

"Angels head athletic trainer Mike Frostad said Sunday that Moniak still could come back this season because it’s “not a very significant fracture.” Frostad said the location of the fracture — at the tip of his finger — means he could even play before it’s completely healed, as long as he can tolerate it.

This is the second broken finger this year for Moniak, who was hit by a pitch in the Philadelphia Phillies’ final exhibition game this spring. He didn’t return to the Phillies lineup until May 30."

He broke it bunting, so it wasn't Long moving him closer to the plate that caused it.

Yes, probably. I feel pretty bad for him, two broken bones in one year is pretty awful.
