Was just going to post that along with this one - Nats' longtime international director (since 2009 and at the Assistant GM level since 2019) resigned. Sounds like it might be for non-baseball reasons.

Phillies probably get one season w/o the Mets as serious competition next year while they put a whole new regime in place (including a President of Baseball Ops and presumably a new manager).

Well, you might be right, but if so why not just issue a statement thanking him for the good work he did in the past - which was considerable - and saying it was time to move on if so? "Team policy' feels like a cop-out.

I guess the other interpretation would be that Rizzo didn't actually want him to go but was not given a choice as he negotiates his own new contract. And they let the guy resign instead of firing him.

The reason for his resignation was not immediately known or provided by the team. DiPuglia declined further comment. General Manager Mike Rizzo did not immediately respond to requests for comment Saturday. A team spokeswoman declined to comment, citing a team policy not to publicly discuss personnel. DiPuglia was one of Rizzo’s closest confidants in the organization.

Some insight into the waiver process. It sounds like every team submits their claims in advance, and then they find out whether teams ahead of them claimed the same guy or guys. So, for instance, the Reds claimed all three of the pitchers the Guardians got, as well as Bader and Renfroe. And obviously nobody ahead of Cleveland claimed those three pitchers and nobody ahead of Cincinnati claimed those two OFs.

And meanwhile, ICYMI - Grichuk not being claimed means the Angels' attempt to get under the CBT failed, and they will not only have to pay the tax but get less for Ohtani.

And right after I posted that part about the Angels (they moved Stassi to the restricted list for the rest of the season, which I guess Blum is implying they could have reasonably done sooner if they'd wanted to).

This move does get the Angels below the luxury tax.

I dunno, it seems to me that barring an actual mental health stipulation, which the player did not ask for, they were actually bending MLB rules by keeping him on the IL, even if it seemed like a nice thing to do. When Ben Zobrist was going through a difficult divorce he was put on the restricted list. If you want to take more time away from the game due to a birth, or the death of a family member, you go on the restricted list (never mind if there should be longer paternity leave). If your wife or kid gets sick, you go on the restricted list.

He was only on the 60-day IL because he actually did have a hip injury, so it was kind of a loophole to leave him there. But he's no longer injured.

Just reading more on the Stassi issue, it sounds like he voluntarily opted to go on the restricted list. It doesn’t sound like there is any ill will between him and Angels management

Los Angeles Dodgers starter Julio Urías was arrested and charged with felony domestic violence charges late last night, an officer with the LAPD tells ESPN.

Urias, 27, was booked late Sunday and released early this morning on $50,000 bond.

Oh and not only did he probably just cost himself hundreds of millions.... he just made Aaron Nola more expensive because Urias was one of the big name starters in free agency this winter

Yup. Though I think he was probably going back to the Dodgers (and possibly still is - I don't believe anyone has ever been banned from MLB for domestic violence. The Dodgers did cut ties with Trevor Bauer but a lot of differences between those two players, baseball-wise and otherwise. Be easier for them to take him back than for another team to actively pursue him.

He'll probably miss quite a bit of next season. Of course it all depends on the legal process too but still cynical about that. The University of Texas fired their basketball coach last year for cause even after the charges were dropped and he had a new job almost immediately.

Yeah I didnt mean banned... but more like Trevor Bauer who no team was willing to touch.

Yeah I just think Bauer is much older, considered a problem in the clubhouse and has been accused of things that people see as possibly worse than DV (that shouldn't be true but is).

This will be the first second suspension though, so it could potentially be a very long one. Especially since MLB will be embarassed that they bought the narrative of it not being that serious, and that he was suitably repentant, the first time.

Ironic that Urias and Nola are the top two available FAs (esp now that Ohtani can't pitch) and...

(Urias) has struggled this season, posting a 4.60 ERA and allowing a career-high 24 home runs in 117⅓ innings.

Any abuse of a woman is seen as serious in a way that wasn’t a few years ago. If the head of the Spanish women’s soccer program can get canned for an unwarranted kiss. Public figures that abuse women are in for the new world’s wrath. No club in MLB can afford the publicity that would come by employing a two time abuser.

I'd like to think you're correct. But Odubel Herrera still played for the Phillies just last season, and he wasn't even good (he is also still signed, by one of MLB's Indy ball partner leagues). I'm not even sure I'd bet money that Bauer doesn't play in MLB again after his season in Japan.

For now it seems unlikely Urias would get a qualifying offer, as it would not only look bad for LA but he probably won't be able to sign with a new team before the compensation expires. So unlike with Bauer the Dodgers won't have to do anything, procedurally. He'll presumably still be on administrative leave until the off-season and then he'll be a free agent.

the way you worded it makes it sound like women are seeing things as abuse that you dont consider being abuse. Thats what I get from "they see as abuse ". But im gonna assume you just phrased it badly.
