The runner really looks like he ran out of the baseline. The way I understood the rule is that there was an implied line between the runner and the base in those situations and a move to run outside that line to avoid a tag constituted running outside the baseline. Definitely a gray area.

I saw that he had a walkoff hit on the crawl on the bottom of the screen, so went to watch it and it was such a lucky piece of nonsense that it's amazing it didn't happen to the 2026 Phillies

The line is established when the fielder makes a play on the runner. Straight line from runner to base. The runner has three feet to either side of that line. if there is an interruption in the play (ball dropped, thrown ball to another fielder) a new line is established if a play is again made on the runner. It’s a well-written rule, actually. I can’t tell from the camera angle where the runner was when the catcher fielded the ball. I’ll look for an overhead view.

The injury occurred with two outs in the bottom of the third after Suárez took an awkward sideways hop attempting to field an infield single by Jo Adell. He showed visible discomfort and exited the game following a brief discussion on the mound

And, I was close to saying that letting Suarez walk looks like a move that is not working all that well so far.

Not even his first injury of the year. Luzardo 2.3 WAR to Ranger's 1.5 as well. To me Ranger was never staying, after the original Sanchez extension rather than the Luzardo trade. He got hurt every year and Boras clients almost always go to market. If they'd extended him in 2024 we'd have been talking about him like we talk about Nola at various points over the last two years.
