While he might still have some sort of "home" in Philly, Cole is signing with the Padres. Must be like 12th in line for them as a starter with everybody they have been signing of late.

I think they shifted their main residence to Missouri (Heidi's home state) after the original Rangers trade. Also sold their Delco place not that long ago.

Seems like a long shot to make the Padres rotation. Snell Darvish Wacha Musgrove are the top 4. They have a lot of arms battling for that 5th spot already. With his wife being from the southern Missouri area - that is Cardinals and Royals country, wonder if the Royals reached out to him to join Greinke. Then again Royals are destined for a last place finish again........

He would be their Cristopher Sanchez or Bailey Falter at best.

I think he is on the late career Roger Clemens or Pedro Martinez plan. Slow ramp up through the year and hope everything is healthy and working by the All Star break. Assume as a non roster player he can let all the players ahead of him take the early parts of the season and the Padres can assess where he is in May or June.

That would certainly be the best-case scenario. The worst-case is he doesn't ever get out of the minors, or retires along the way. Kind of like Ryan Howard in 2017.

He hasn't really pitched since 2019 which I guess could be good if he's healthy and rested. But he could also come up injured again quickly.

He could always be a reliever (or opener) too.

More on Cole. He says he is pain free. Just wonder if he can win if he is only throwing 88-90. Possible if his change is still there. He does say he is hitting 87 in his bullpens at home. Hard to say what he can sustain of course until he actually does it, and also has to repeat that every 5-6 days.
