Related to the Dodgers - Cubs opening the 2025 season in Japan, I looked up the Phillies and we have not had a Japanese player on the roster since 2008 (So Taguchi) and he was one of two Japanese players to suit up for the Phillies in their long history.

There have obviously been a limited amount of Japanese players in MLB over the years (there are currently 12 players on 7 teams) and I know DD expanded the organization's scouting and focus on Japan last year. Hopefully, that will lead to better understanding the talent there and being more attractive as a MLB destination.

I haven't looked, but I'm trying to remember any major Japanese player that signed with an eastern division team besides the Yankees or Red Sox. Kodai Senga, I guess though he was a bit more middling (and has missed this season so far though he is rehabbing). Can't think of any Braves, Orioles, Blue Jays, but may I am forgetting some.

The Mets had Tsuyoshi Shinjo earlier this century and they have two on their roster now...Senga and Fujinari Shintaro. I guess New York City helps to draw them.

Tadahito Iguchi in 2007 and part of 2008. Both played for the Phillies around the same time.

Iguchi was great in '07 and just an afterthought (literally, added after the playoff roster deadline) in '08. Taguchi was the Josh Harrison of his time, he had a track record as a pinch hitter and bench player except the samples were too small to actually be one.

I think this past year's bid for Yamamoto and the new director of international scouting being someone with more experience in Asia bodes well. While I think it's hard to compete with NY/LA/SF/Seattle, Texas and Chicago have both managed to do it.

Yes Iguchi was great in 2007 and filled in very well when Utley was injured. Had the Phillies acquired a lesser player at the deadline, or one who performed poorly for them, they might not have won the division that year.

Just so sad for Trout and baseball

Mike Trout was removed from his first Triple-A rehab game after two innings with soreness in his surgically repaired left knee, the Angels announced. The expectation was that he would return by week’s end. That might no longer be the case, though that part is unclear.

What would you even give up for him at this point? Is he even going to be an OF in another year or two? Very sad.

It's not like the Angels are holding him back. He doesn't want to leave. At this point they'd probably love it if he would except for the part where they've lost any chance of getting a high-impact return. And they'll have to pay half his salary to boot. This day will come for the Philllies too, but hopefully not that soon.

I want to trade for Trout circa 2012-2019 ish. I'll settle for his worst season in that span.

A sad turn of events for a once great player, just cannot stay healthy

I think this is the best thing for him. While this is a setback this year, the year as a whole was not a draining year. He has the time to heal correctly and come back strong next year. Let's hope it's here in Philly.
