Well, it's only partially weird. At the same time as reducing daily meal money on the road, the CBA mandates that clubs provide pre- or post-game meals in the visitors clubhouse for teams on the road - so instead of giving them meal money, they're providing spreads in the clubhouse (under the supervision of nutritionists). Not said anywhere, but the real effect is likely to be less use of "meal money" to feed third parties, buy alcohol, etc.
I can well imagine this won't sit well with some of the players -- although when you're being paid $535k to $20m a year, quibbling over the difference here is...I'm not sure what adjective I'd pick, but it wouldn't be complimentary!
