I just don't think we really know what kind of work they have done with him, or when. Nor do we truly know whether he would have progressed differently, or what other factors may be holding him back now.
Also, you can't say on the one hand that the Phillies have a history of too much front office influence on picks, and then on the other that the change wasn't huge. Jordan surely has new marching orders (or maybe he had his own ideas that weren't implemented under the old regime). We already saw the draft strategy change a lot between 2015 and 2016.
Not saying anyone deserves "a pass" but it seems equally possible they botched the pick, or that Randolph simply isn't living up to his potential, than that the coaches have let him down. I can definitely state with the same amount of certainty that his first season was a fluke/SSS/hot streak as I can that it's because they changed his swing, i.e., none.
And if he actually still progresses after another half-season Reading, that might also mean they were right.
