Fascinating to watch the Phils philosophy at work..tonight Luke Williams is at 1b and Andrew Knapp is playing 3b. It is my opinion that to truly understand how valued the Phils view a player, see how many positions they play him at.

The more positions they try him at, the better they like him. I think they like Williams a whole lot.

Oh, and Moniak with another first inning hit, now at .270.

What strikes me as a very strange line for Spencer Howard: 10 hits in 5 IP, but no walks and 9 Ks. The 10 hits make it look like he was throwing to contact, almost batting practice, yet almost 2 Ks/IP make it look like he was untouchable. Nice start for Lindow.

I think it reflects Howard's stuff, a live FB he can command, but he's still working on secondary pitches.

The team asking him to cut the walks and pitch to contact is most likely the explanation, certainly not his stuff which is theoretically supposed to miss bats. He has had a pretty high walk rate all year (3.4 with yesterday) and the team probably told him that was not acceptable especially in a home park like Lakewood where it is tough to hit it out.

Howard clearly has good stuff as evidenced by his K rate. It is just hard to know if he is dominating younger hitters at Lakewood to know how good his stuff really is.

94-99 mph the first 2 innings, 94-97 in the later innings. Still strong this late in the year! Slider is hard and short 86-89 mph - it lands in the middle of the plate a bit too often. Probably needs a little more late break. He threw a few changeups that were enough to make me say “wow”. Equally as many that made me say “ugh”. With his stuff, hopefully he’s studying the Max Scherzer playbook. His fastball at the knees is death to the hitter, but he pitches up with it a bit and when it comes in at the belt he gets hit a bit. I think without a curveball that comes in at the same plane, hitters know they can unleash because no matter fastball, slider, or change, it not going to drop out of the zone if it’s at the belt.
