But that said…is there an equivalent (or even close) baseball idiom I don’t know about, and could have used? Not being defensive here, but idiomatic language is useful (and fun), so if I’m missing something obvious (or obscure, for that matter), I’d love to add it to the toolbox (the batrack?).

Not seeing it...I don't see that as "giving up," so much as just one (among many) kinds of failure at the plate. (Baseball really is a game of failures, isn't it? One of the things that sets it apart, IMHO.)

There is "Throw in the towel." But that's really boxing, isn't it?

A punt can be fumbled and result in a big gain for the punting team. It isn't giving up on the game, simply ending the current position and hoping to get better field position for the next. The baseball analogy, no longer in vogue -- although I guess you could sub allowing Moniak to bat, was allowing a pitcher with normally inept batting skill to come to the plate with two outs and runners in scoring position and down one run. The team elects to give up on the current inning and go to the next. It was often considered more of a surrender than a punt is in football, especially if the SP in question had already pitched 5 or more innings.

Yes, I agree a punt isn't really giving up - though some analytics people would say, never-ever do it - but that the colloquialism exists is undeniable.

And I guess leaving the bat on your shoulder can also be the opposite of giving up, if you know the pitcher can't hit the strike zone.
