Then I guess they have to let Bohm walk. Because Turner and Stott are just as firmly planted in their positions as Harper, so Miller can only go to 3B. So are the Phillies doing the wrong thing by keeping him at SS for now?

I don’t know that Turner is THAT planted at SS. I think there will be a day that he moves, maybe to CF, maybe 2B if Stott is not retained when he is a FA. Turner is already a below average defensive SS, he isn’t going to get better.

Anybody (Miller included) can play LF also. If Miller develops it will be a nice problem to have. Options are always good.

Not that draftees will slot into these rosters, but with mid-season promotions, space will open on the Low-A and FCL rosters.

FCL Season ends 7/27, they could theoretically move people up before then, but I don't know if there is a rush. Also the FCL team is currently at 26 (at that counts Escobar who hasn't played in a month), not counting rehabs, so they aren't going to empty that roster prematurely.

There are a bunch of guys out on rehab assignments (Rincones, Muzziotti, McGowan, Pan, Fowler, Garbrick, Farquhar, McGarry) so I would expect some movement from those.

With full season leagues off for much of this week it is a natural time to move players up. It will be interesting to see if any draftees play. Assume not at FCL as they will finish out the year, but in Clearwater. I always assumed a handful of FCL players would move up to Clearwater at the end of the year, though it also makes sense to finish the year and maybe get in the playoffs.

It also would make sense to extend the FCL season to 70 or 80 games so it lasted through August like in previous years. It seems a useful place for younger players to play (and even get the HS draftees a cup of coffee).

They are playing an unofficial league through August and I think September. I believe shortening the season was saving money or a trade off for moving it earlier with the loss of short season leagues.

I'm not sure it matters much at the FCL level whether you're playing games, informal games or intra-squad games. I'd assume the emphasis is on individual instruction at that level, and games are really for evaluating how they're implementing that instruction.

Given Clearwater also plays at the complex, it's going to be a continuation of the FCL to some extent. A higher level of competition, but you're stlll going against a lot of limited players (lacking talent and/or experience).

JS seems to be where players start facing real competition at a level that tests their ability.

The Phillies have re-signed David Dahl to a minor-league deal. He will report to Triple A this week. They had been seeking some outfield depth.

If the Phillies add a right-handed bat now to platoon with Marsh the logical 28th man in September would be left-handed. Dahl probably would have a 50-50 chance of being that bat (most likely only a pinch hitter). Could be Marchan too if they want to ease JTs playing time, but we need to maintain our lead for that to play out.

At the end of the day either Dahl or Clemens is probably fine for that job though Marchan is intriguing. I think they will want him to keep playing in LV, remember the season is longer now.

You just can't really expect a Matt Stairs to never play, including in October, and then show up and do that. Those guys are hard to find. Cave wasn't good but a better player in August and September was still going to be challenged to get a pinch-hit. Heck how many do the Phillies have all this season?

That is why Dahl is kind of ideal as that pinch hitter who will get 5-10 at bats all month potentially. September only roster spot. And they could even swap Marchan back in at the end of the month. We'll almost certainly go back to a 13/13 roster for the playoffs given our need for 1-inning bullpen arms.
