Yolbert Sanchez cleared to sign in MLB

In the attached article about recently cleared Cuban SS Yolbert Sanchez there is a listing of the teams who still have the most money left estimated as follows

Baltimore - Close to $6m
St. Louis - $1.85M
Los Angeles - $1.4M
PHILADELPHIA - close to $1.0M
Cubs, Rangers, Red Sox - $700K - $850K

Not sure if he is a great fit for us if he is almost ready for the majors with us just getting Segura. Baltimore really needs to spend that $6 million too on something and with a new regime in place they seem more willing to.

Oh....I don't think we will sign this guy at all. Baltimore should just overpay for him having lost out on Victor Victor Mesa. I just thought it was interesting that we still have 1M left.

We have not really signed anyone worthy of mention in BA since we made that last allocation trade, so it is reasonable to assume we have not used most of it, mainly signing guys for modest amounts (less than $100K) since then.

It would be nice if MLB kept a list of who has how many dollars left, but reporters give us a clue every month or two.

Further note that although St. Louis has 1.85M left they are in the penalty and therefore can't sign anyone for more than 300K

interesting about the money left. i would guess there would not be carryover allowed. are there any players that fell through the cracks? any late bloomers that are in the Dominican that Sal can find? It would be nice to find a "hidden" George Bell that is lurking around. Go to it, Sal.

My guess is we actually look to Asia for spending much of the rest of our allocation. The two kids we added from Taiwan the last couple of years signed relatively late, I believe. Since amateur talent is often on a different clock there (i.e. not signing right when they turn 16), it is not uncommon to see late signings in the $100K-$300K range.

andyb..you beat me to the punch about Asia but I will add the name. Phils are scouting LHP/RF Lin An-KO, a highly rated collegian in Taiwan, who is set to sign after he graduates from college. Phils were recently in Taiwan to watch him play and are said to be interested.

Here is a compilation of that report from last month. We signed the Taiwanese kids in June and September, so one at the end of the previous period and one a couple of months in the new period. This like also has us among 5 teams looking at a utility (catcher, middle infield) prospect (Chen Sheng-Ping).

Rodriguez turned 16 last May.

I think the cutoff line for any international class is 8/31. So there is only a 2-month period (July and August) when a team would have to wait until a player turns 16. After that one waits until next July.

Setting that aside, signing any 16-year-old is probably better than signing any 18-year-old in terms of potential. Outside of late bloomers, bonus money is generally paid to the most talented 16-year-olds.

Academy is still open- the Liga Parallela played on this winter. The kid they expect to give a 2.5 million bonus to this July played there (among others). Kids that get the bonuses are shipped out to the Dominican or stateside.

I wouldn't think so. If the Phils need additional international bonus pool allocation, they can trade for it. Generally speaking, two $250k tranches of allocation can be had for a couple of non-blue-chip prospects. It should be manageable.
