I think a hit tool is definitely different, but you have to question how they're evaluating the hit tool.
Hoskins, and it looks like Hall, says you can identify it.
But to me, it's more about raw skills, eyesight (as much about processing information quickly, especially picking up the spin on the ball), plate discipline, eye to hand coordination, quick twitch muscles.
You're probably going to remake their swing, and with 18 years olds, they're going to remake their body just due to physical maturity. But if they can see the spin, have a feel for where a pitch is located, and have the body control to develop a quick, fluid swing they can adjust to any coaching changes you make.
The scouting mistake may have been focusing on end results, how they look as a hitter at their current level, rather than the underlying skill package.
