That was one of twentysomething games I attended that season. Maybe even thirtysomething. The Phillies called it "Christmas in July" and the box which contained the Hamels bobblehead said "Cole in your stocking" on it. The Phillies ballgirl squad--which debuted that season--wore those Ms. Santa outfits (but in a tasteful way) while collecting toys for a toy drive the Phillies held.

Exciting win in 14 for the Phils, Howard with the walkoff homer. Phils, though, still stuck in 3rd, still 5 games back.

Going for the sweep vs the Nats. Adam Eaton vs one John Lannan, making his ML debut. What could go wrong?

Great day yesterday. Phils blow a lead and lose to the lowly Nats and Chase Utley, possible NL MVP, is hit with a pitch that breaks his hand and is out, possibly for the rest of the season. So much for that playoff drive. Phils call up Joe Thurston, but say it will probably be Abraham Nunez there for a while.

There is some good news, though. Brett Myers has been activated (Mike Zagurski sent down).

And now this BREAKING NEWS: Phils have acquired Tadahito Iguchi from the White Sox! For Michael Dubee! Maybe this makes up for the Freddy Garcia debacle. We'll see.

I had forgotten about the whole Lannan issue, he was enemy #1 for a couple years. As I remember he had 2 seasons where the Phils accounted for 2/3 of his hit batters, including this ugly one of Utley. He had light feet every time in the batters box until the whole thing blew over.

Big night for Pat the Bat and Michael Bourn last night, laugher against Pittsburgh called after 7. Phils move into 2nd place, hopefully we're done with third now.* And Moyer looked good. JD Durbin again tonight, and Iguchi debuts for us.

Folk hero Chris Coste did the folk hero thing with the big 3 run homer last night, Iguchi chipped in too and the Phils took game 2 of the Pirates series and are now 3 1/2 games out of first.

Kendrick and the gang swept the Pirates yesterday. But the bad news is Ryan Madson was injured yesterday, may be done for the season. Geoff "Gascan" Geary coming back. More bad news, the Braves are getting Mark Texiera in a deadline trade. But the Phils try to counter that by acquiring Kyle Lohse from the Reds for minor league pitcher Matt Maloney. Some of us urged the Phils not to trade any youngster for him*. Mets add Luis Castillo.

And sad news, former Phil Bill Robinson passed away.

Anyway, it's on to Chicago.

Phils and Hamels win again, they're just 3 games back for the first time since the disastrous Mets series back at the end of June. But both Shane Victorino and Michael Bourn are getting tested to see how severe their injuries are from last night, as we ended up needing 3 guys to play RF last night. Maybe we'll see the return of Jayson Werth from his wrist injury, though his .235 average isn't amazing, and his rehab hasn't been all that great either.

*Update: Both Vic and Bourn are headed to the DL. Werth will indeed be activated (though Beerleaguer says he doesn't belong on a ML roster) and they'll call up Chris Roberson. And we're DFA'ing Clay Condrey again to make room for Kyle Lohse.

Phils win streak snapped, but some good news as the Mets lost in 13 innings on a Geoff Jenkins walkoff homer. Always liked that guy from afar. The injury plagued Phils are still in second, 3 games back. Game 3 of 4 in Chicago.

Back to back losses and the Phils have dropped back to 3rd place. Beerleaguer points out that it's pretty clear that the Carlos Ruiz month of awfulness proves he's not a starting catcher. Anyway, it's Game 4 in Chicago, finally a day game! Jayson Werth is back, Chris Coste is in, and Kyle Lohse will make his Phils debut.

Somehow , even with Lohse getting hurt and the patchwork lineup we field these days, we escape Wrigley with a split. Werth with a career high 4 RBIs. He might get a chance to stick if he can stay healthy.

We're back in 2nd, 4 games out. On to Milwaukee to face the first place Brewers, who yesterday were fighting amongst themselves. Rod Barajas headed to the DL, and Clay Condrey is back for the 5th time. DFA'd 4 times already this season, he keeps coming back.
