I'm a fan of the rule (as is SF) saying you should never acquire a reliever who is coming off a strong season, because you inevitably get the fall-off. We acquired Hunter at his peak and he's been merely okay, we acquired Robertson because he never got hurt and he finally got hurt, we acquired Workman who was really good last year (much like Neris) and not so much this year (ditto). But I don't think anyone expected this from Phelps given how he'd been performing this season. Maybe being traded was more disruptive than anyone could have realized.
