Hunter turns in the type of 9th inning we have all been waiting for of late. Very nicely done. Great win for the Phillies. Great to see Santana with the early home run to tie the game and Hoskins with the homer to put them ahead for good.

Braves drop another tonight. They scored 2 in the 8th to pull to within one and had the bases loaded with one out, but didn't tie the game. D-Backs loaded the bases with no outs in the top of the 9th and managed one run on a sac fly. Going to the bottom of the 9th, the Braves trailed 5-3, and they went down easily to end the game at that score.

So Phillies move to 2.5 games out of first place.

Nola has become a dinger machine, 5 in two games, wonder if this is the first sign of arm fatigue, starting to lose his great command. Kapler had better be cautious with his workload the rest of the season, it's tempting to ride your ace, but this isn't the year to grind him down.

Guy gave up 3 hits and 1 BB. Got unlucky that the three balls he hit scored runs l (2 were mistakes that were crushed, 1 was a fluke double on an outstanding pitch). I’m not too worried about his workload.

If any team's PBP guy is not entitled to get butthurt over a batflip, it's a Mets PBP guy. Heck, the gave out a bobblehead to commemorate Cabrera's.

With Nola the HRs are probably more regression to the mean than any sort of fatigue. Nola throws strikes. He has very good command but he also is changing speeds with only average velocity. So at some point he will throw strikes that can be hit. Remember Cliff Lee and Cole Hamels would give up their fair share of home runs also. Sometimes a batter sits on a first pitch strike like Bruce did last night and hits it.

Nola's season was unique in the small number of home runs he had given up prior to the last couple of starts (8). He does limit home runs pretty effectively, but his rate last year (1.0/9) was much worse than his rate this year (0.6/9 even with 5 of his 13 HRs in the last 2 starts). Fatigue is certainly something to watch for with Nola pushing new inning limits (and starting more often than other starters), but giving up a few home runs should probably be expected from a guy that throws so many strikes and tries to limit the number of pitches he throws. At least he is pretty good about not giving up 3-run HRs.

That was a very important win for its own sake. But in the next two games against the "lowly" Mets, we face two of the best pitchers in baseball. If the devil offered me a split in these two games, I would take it in a second.

The five teams in our division are 19-31 in the last ten games. Only one team (the Mets) are even playing .500 ball. The opportunity to back into first place is still alive, even though we are not playing good ball at all. We need a streak in these next 3 weeks. This will be a good test of our young manager. Can he get this group back on track under pressure?

A split at Citi and then they simply can't let the Nats win any games. But I really think the season will make or break in Colorado. The Rockies are a good team and it is an unpredictable setting.They can win four of seven games against the Braves but if they don't also take the Rockies series they might need five or six.

Funny about Altherr, I don't think line-ups matter very much, and just trying anything (whether on a hunch or data) seems fair right now. Obviously # of ABs per game does matter but with the long bench you can see what he was going for. Plus, as cold as most of the hitters have been in more recent times he wasn't necessarily a lot worse than other options.

Let's hope some guys get hot (Hoskins, Herrera, Cabrera, a healed Franco).

Mets announcers also scoffed at Nola's Cy Young chances because of ERA, without noting that every time they broadcast at CBP they call it a bandbox.

No problem with trying Altherr even though the minor league starts were fairly average. If we are going to have a 35-person roster then tandem starts for pitchers (with Eickhoff) and hitters (some L/R platooning) are fine. We can take the RH platoon out in the 5th inning, replace them with 2-3 LH hitters, and still have a wave of bats (Bour, Franco last night, Cozens) available for pinch hitting.

One of our advantages is the ability to have a deep roster in September because of our AAA depth this year plus the ability to add that payroll. We don't really have too many dominant hitters that are playing well that demand to be out there in every situation. Let's do a L/R Crawford/Kingery platoon too and let the last AB for that platoon be someone else off the bench. This is our advantage. Let's use it.
