That's assuming that the team actually has quit, which I don't think is a given. Has a team collapsed like this? Sure, the 1964 Phillies did -- didn't even finish second. That collapse came even closer to the end of the season.

It's not a good look for anyone. You would have liked to think that something - desperation, pride, or even the relaxation from being eliminated - would have sparked a little energy. I think injuries also played a role in September (Franco, Williams, Quinn). But it also really showed the extent to which Hoskins and Nola carried the team.

The breakdown is striking but I suspect you can also make the case that they were never really better than a .500 club (luck/easier schedule fueled the three good months).This is a bit more than a correction/regression though.

It's not exactly the same thing, but just this season, Cincinnati has gone from brutally bad (8-27 to start the season), to quite good (43-52 was their high water mark just before the All Star break, so 35-25 for ~2 months), back to terrible (66-92 with 4 games left).

The starters were like that too- when Pivetta went south then Efflin got good, then Vasquez- now it's a miracle to get more than 3 innings out of anyone other than Nola. I wouldn't call their poor performance quitting...I'm not so sure about Arrietta.

Hoskins carried them for a while. Most of the hitters were very inconsistent.

Yeah we kept saying they just needed one more middle of the order bat, but that bat was supposed to be here already. A .290-hitting Herrera and a .260-hitting Santana probably gets the job done along with a consistent Hoskins if Franco and Williams also continued chipping in. Maybe they don't even bother getting Cabrera if that had been the case.

And even if just Hernandez and Hoskins had produced this month it could have still been a race.

You can also simultaneously say the bullpen was a strength and point to 10 games that the bullpen lost. But when that's the case it's usually also about other weaknesses putting pressure on the pen.

Looking at the month by month record, it becomes clear that it was in September that they really tanked. Of course, they started the month of August off by winning 5 of the first 6, so they started the slide after August 7. Still, a strong September and they would have been back in it.

The problem was psychological. They needed to get a sports psychologist involved.
