Phillies take the final game and I guess still hanging on to a thread of hope for post season play.

Maybe the Rays rest key players in preparation for the post season and the Phillies sneak into town and win a couple games.

It's a lot more than a thread, last wild card race is still a battle, all the teams have tough finishing schedules. And we're actually gonna end the night just a half game behind the Marlins (they have the tiebreaker though).

I saw someone posted that the Phillies have won 8 of the 10 games Eflin started this season. I don't recall where I saw it and don't know if it is true or not, but if so, that is pretty impressive.

2021 is his 1st arb year, we really should look to sign him to a multi year deal and buy out a free agent year or two.

Eflin has been better this year. The addition of an effective curve has given him good pitches at different speeds. So his K rate has skyrocketed. He is still more like a 3rd or 4th starter though. His stuff gets hit in the zone if he misses spots (the reason for the 4+ ERA). He is worth signing to a modest deal. Not sure I would buy out any free agency years because again, he is only average without a huge track record of success. I'd be fine going year to year also. Stats this year have come against lesser lineups sometimes so it is unclear how good he'll be over a full season. He should not be expensive in arbitration this offseason.

Amaro's trades were clearly better than Klentak's.

2021 is Eflin’s 2nd year arb year. He’ll hit free agency after the 2022 season.

Having Nola and Wheeler for next season, Eflin will be the number 3 starter. It is a good start toward building the rotation. Add a free agent, solid mid-rotation starter from free agency to go with Velasquez and Howard, and they have potentially a solid six for the starting pitching in 2021.

Rosenthal's story today talked about how most teams will likely cut payroll. The Phillies aren't really in a position to do that. But even if they just come back with the same payroll, assuming JT returns, they will have to choose between 2 of Didi, a starter or a high-end reliever (or two mid-level relievers).

I think they'd have to non-tender VV to really be able to afford anyone "mid-rotation," caliber, while a #4 might not be better than Vince. If you're confident in Eflin, that's probably okay. But the other thing Rosenthal's article talks about is how hard it is to glean anything from this season's sample. In a normal season Eflin might have dipped at some point. Conversely, maybe Howard would have gotten better.

If money's no object I still sign someone who slots ahead of Eflin. In a perfect world you'd just hope Howard equals him and you have two really good #3 caliber starters, but can't really expect that in the short-term.

Pretty sure VV gets non-tendered no matter what. There is still probably a chance he comes back at a lower guarantee, potentially with incentives.

In terms of money they do have a little more to play with. $65 million from Arrieta, Didi, JT, Robertson, Bruce, and VV. Likely arbitrations are Eflin, Morgan, Hembree?, Knapp, Hoskins, Seranthony. Assume they non-tender VV and they can probably do all of that for around $10 million.

I guess whether they could add bullpen help depends on whether they could get a starter for closer to $15 million rather than $20 million. They won't be in the Trevor Bauer market but I was assuming Stroman was a guy they have liked periodically in the past. He was going to get $20 million AAV before this season, but not as sure about that now.

If he's non-tendered he probably leaves. If you tender him you probably want to be sure he's in the rotation. If you're chasing Stroman or a trade that's one thing, if you're just gonna sign a mid-level free agent he might not be better (or cheaper) than Vince.

I assume we keep Phelps too, despite his struggles. But maybe not, it's a big $ money jump, percentage wise.

Hard to say what can happen until we know whether they are going to cut payroll. But if that $65 million goes down to $55 million with arbitration awards, it also goes down to $30 million with JT. If you cut payroll, you're done. If not, you lose another $15 million with Didi so you still only have room for either a significant pitcher or significant bullpen help.

I probably just don't sign Didi. Hope for the best with Kingery and Segura since you're stuck with them, add another cheap SS and someone good to replace Bruce.

If it's a buyer's market, why would we just pay the asking price for JT and Didi? The only way you get them for something approaching market value is to let them test the market. QO and see how the market test goes, letting both know we want them back. It's obvious that JT wants to test the market and that it will take a huge pile of $ and years to dissuade him. If the Phillies were determined to sign JT, then they should have taken the cap hit prior to this season and done so. Now we have two big $ benchmarks and a deteriorating future outlook on baseball economics and future salary cap levels.

If they're looking to cut costs Phillies can't even afford the QO on Didi, let alone a three-year deal. But if the market comes to them again, great.

There's little chance they actually successfully keep JT from testing the open market, so they can see how that works out too.

But if you sign both of them I'm not convinced they add anything else. Whether it's due to budget cuts or not repeating this season's mistake of losing all flexibility. You pretty much have to pass on Didi if you want better pitching. JT is a whole other X factor obivously.
