Arrieta is just as I feared, he's losing arm strength, his velocity didn't fall as the season progressed, but his command got worse. This is why I worry about pitchers over 30, it would be interesting to see a study of aging as velocity has increased, because high velocity FBs put the most stress on a pitcher's arm (turns out sliders really aren't as bad as advertised).
Which is why it makes a lot of sense these days to develop pitchers and buy hitters - Klentak's stated philosophy.
You want your pitchers from 22-24 to 28-30 but avoid big money to pitchers in their 30s (unless they're horses, and even then beware of money past 32 or so). So marinate them in the minors until ready, then ride them through their controllable years, rinse and repeat.
