Perhaps this will lift us out of the September mopes. Good win! A really needed win. Good to see Wheeler pitch so well. Except for Realmuto, still need to get the big hitters going again. This is first day in memory that both Schwarber and Hoskins slip below .800 OPS and Harper threatening to slip below .900.

This win ought to alleviate the sense of panic which may have been building.

Our September record us now 8-9, certainly not good but not worthy of the collapse label, at least not yet.

But man, our bullpen is toast. This is where we miss being able to expand September rosters willy-nilly up to forty. We could use all the arms we can get out there right now.

It may well have the play of the year. When I saw it, I knew we couldn't possibly lose. A diving grab, with Jeano's momentum taking him straight to the bag. Always something new to see and experience in this game.

Not sure they actually have anyone we'd want to see in a game anyway. It would be Sanchez and Coonrod (both sent down on merit). Then Plassmeyer, Nittoli, Morales and Taylor Scott. And now Thor is a reliever and so is Eflin. They don't need warm bodies/arms, they need one or two truly effective arms.

With Seranthony still essentially making rehab appearances, no Knebel and a diminished Hand and Robertson, Thomson's magical July bullpen formula no longer adds up. But if Thor and Eflin can help that would be big. And the playoffs will be very different.

There is still McGarry of course. For that they just need a 40-man space.

Thor and Eflin (along with Nelson) gives the bullpen a bit different character. I think it is MUCH more likely we will pull a starter after 3 or 4 innings now since we have more than one option that can go 2+ innings. We still will use a short reliever to finish out an inning of a starter in trouble, but then Thor or Eflin might start the next inning and go 2-3.

Think about the bullpen a month ago. If a starter left early and Nelson was not fresh, it was a parade of 1-inning relievers that would leave the bullpen stretched for the next day or two. I have no idea if Thor and Eflin could pitch longer outings on only 2 or 3 days rest, but if they can at least go 1 on that rest then I kind of like this new bullpen as opposed to the parade of 98 mph relievers lacking command (i.e. Coonrod).

I think things are a little more constricted than that though. Eflin has been having back spasms and can't pitch on consecutive days/may not even be able to do longer outings (and it has also been suggested he gets paired with Suarez). And Thor's appearances are probably already scripted (i.e. he won't pitch again until Wheeler's next start, and then he takes the doubleheader game. I suppose he could do "throw day" type appearances in between but given he's not used to relieving maybe not).

The real issue is that Seranthony and Robertson are the best relievers, and one of them is still not recovered from his IL stint, while the other hit a lull from overuse. Maybe come playoff time Thor or Efllin step up as a higher-leverage option, though either of them could also be scripted for a possible Game 3 (or not on the wild card roster at all).

Because he is not as good as our other relievers? That is the fundamental problem with Thor really. He is very average and hittable. They've been spotting him against weaker teams. It would be nice if his stuff picked up in shorter outings, but it looked like he was still only 94-95 last night.

Thor is also an open invitation to stolen bases. Right now our best reliever is Alverado, and maybe he's the closer we should be using. And when a reliever is lights out for an inning with a low pitch count, why not let him stay out there for a second inning? I think more relievers should be conditioned to go once through the lineup, especially in the DH era.
