The Braves have closed to within a run, however.

Color me largely unimpressed with Arrieta. Hopefully better to come next season.

Santana and Arrieta were both veterans signed to three year deals. The old regime signed plenty of veterans to three year deals (see Halladay extended for three years upon acquiring him, Ibanez, Polanco) but at least those guys were all good in their first seasons. Santana and Arriet weren't even that good their first season. What's worse with Arrieta is that he faded down the stretch.

Arrieta is not closing that well, but he has performed as advertised, basically being a 3 WAR player. Since wins are worth at least $8 or $9 million he has been worth his contract. His velocity has been fine also, so he does not seem too much of a risk to regress absent injury.

If this team had to find 180 more innings from other pitchers (Lively, Leiter, Eshelman, Irvin, Suarez, De Los Santos) the results might have been pretty ugly.

Santana's been good, while also being disappointing. Arrieta too really. They both did exactly what they were signed to do, provide stable veteran presences to help this team get from 60some wins to 80some wins. In Santana's case there were unintended (if not surprising) consequences. In both cases, the Phillies weren't going to get anyone better (not wanting to pay the trade or FA cost, plus most of the FA pitchers didn't turn out to be better). Had they not signed them we wouldn't be crying over falling out of first place though.
