Neris gives us a 1-2-3 ninth, two strike outs and a game ending ground out.

Good work from the bullpen and production from the offense gets it done tonight.

Phillies hang in with the Mets, who have to lose again soon. They are in the mix but need more games like this. But you never know how a season will go. They could be in second, third, or fourth place by the end of the weekend.

Alvarez, the reliever who gave up twice as many hits as he got outs, gets the win. The relievers who saved the day with three shutout innings get holds and a save for Neris, number 20.

Two four run innings from the offense sure look good. Nice hitting from Dickerson with 3 RBIs and Harper, with his two home runs and 4 RBIs.

Neris is frustratingly great, he really is like a power hitter, incredibly streaky. Funny part is his key is that the splitter is NEVER a strike. It gets crushed when it is up, but as long as he combines the extreme downward moving splitter with his plus fastball he is dominating.

Every once in awhile he will always find a hitter that can lay off the splitter, but the vast majority of hitters seem baffled by which pitch is coming.

Funny part is his key is that the splitter is NEVER a strike.

I was curious and looked at his splits and 3 of the 4 teams this year Neris does worst against are the Mets, Marlins, and Braves. The Dodgers are the other team of course he has fared poorly against and the Nats are around his league average.

The poorer performance in division may be a sign that teams in the division know his splitter is not a strike. And the Dodgers are known for picking up stuff like that in their preparation also. My long term concerns with Neris were always about what would happen when teams lay off that pitch and that his fastball command just needed to be better. Neris has improved that fastball command some, so he is adjusting.

Downside to all this though is that he is probably not the best closer to have 3 or 4 outings against the same team in a playoff series. Until they get to the World Series of course and the other team has not seen much of Neris. He has a .198 OPS against in interleague play this year.

Probably just a computer glitch or power issue. But I'll keep an eye out - if there's no game thread by something near game time (and I'm not too distracted by things here - we're getting my wife's work ready for a solo show - drop off next weekend - so I've got a lot of framing/wiring to do, plus consult on who-knows-what, plus dinner...), I'll crank up my gameday spreadsheet and generate lineups. Not likely that I'll be doing PBP (although I'll probably be free to drop in inning summaries - they don't require much effort, or constant concentration on the game the way PBP does).

Neris is not that different from Lidge but Lidge (when he was on) had a pretty unhittable fastball They are both the kind of relievers who could put two guys on base (a walk and a hard-hit single) and still strike out the side. But if they make a mistake, home run. He really is having a nice season though. He's probably never going to be one of the five elite guys but Jansen, for instance, has been no better this year (but was for a long time).

Every once in a while a team will definitely put their bat on the shoulder and just see if they can get four balls out of Hector's splitter, which you certainly can.

Unfortunately we'll never know what kind of reliever usage would have worked in this year's playoffs, whether we are in them or not. Looking back it's surprising to see Seranthony didn't even have a single save, while Robertson only pitched 6 innings. Neshek was second on the team with three.
