I think I appreciate Hector more then ever - he's not an elite reliever and if we were a championship caliber team he'd be our 7th or 8th inning guy (certainly they hoped that he and Robertson and Seranthony would share the late-inning load last year). But it's really freaking hard to just establish yourself as good reliever in the first place, and show up for as many seasons as he has. Most guys turn out to be Yacksel Rios or Edubray Ramos, or get hurt, and even a lot of better relievers alternate good years with bad ones (including Lidge and Giles). We may even miss him when he's gone, which isn't that far off either.

Eflin looked really good, his 2 seamer showed much better movement than last season, he was throwing it too much, but I think that was the plan, first polish his bread and butter pitch, then they'll work on refining his other stuff the next few starts - he is a week or two behind due to the back issues and the Marlin disease vector problem. But a 93-95 MPH two seamer with that kind of movement is a much better foundation than a straight as an arrow four seamer at 95-96 (see Pivetta).

When he can balance his stuff with the 4 seamer high in the zone as a show me pitch, the changeup, curve and cutter/slider he might just be ready for a breakout season.

Neris will continue to be an enigma I suspect. Simple fact is his splitter, when thrown correctly, is a ball. Every once in awhile he seems to lose the deception, no one swings at it and they destroy his fastball. Then whatever happens switches back and he is a very good pitcher.

You can’t count on him for a great season, but he can absolutely get on very high quality runs. Then it all implodes for 2 weeks.

Unfortunately he is alone out there, when it implodes I have no idea who we turn to? Morgan?

That's pretty much how it goes with Neris. Generally, he's good but when he goes through his bad stretches, he's bad and those bad stretches generally drive his narrative with the fans.

Overall, Neris has been a valuable reliever for the Phillies, but we all cannot fail to recall some of his failures. We probably magnify those failures. I admit that last night, I could not help but think of times when he would get two out and then lose a game. But I try to remember the many, many times he was able to get that third out and save the game.

It clearly is true that he is fine for one of the late inning relievers the team needs. The real problem is that they don't have at least two more and ideally three or four more like him. Losing Robertson and Dominguez certainly ruined the pen last season and still is hurting this season.
