The announcers were saying JT does not really like to pinch hit and is not good at it in general, so might as well give him the full day off.
The Wilson roster spot should really be a left-handed bat though. Wilson has done nothing wrong, but if he is not even playing a platoon role the main job for that spot is pinch-hitting. Sosa is better defensively in the infield and Wilson is worse defensively than all the starting outfielders so won't get much time there. And it is a rare day like last week when two infielders (Turner and Stott) were rested in the same game.
