Well we did make up the five runs Smyly gave up. Kapler tried out his new bullpen toys, but they didn’t look so good. I actually like Smyly’s pitching as he has command of the corners, but he’s still going to throw some bad pitches that get hammered. This team is not going to win consistency until Hoskins or Harper get hot.just because they kept Rodriguez instead of Franco doesn’t mean they have to put him in the starting line

SF...at what point do you accept the possibility, indeed the likelihood, that Harper and Hoskins are hitting precisely as they will hit for the rest of the season? I sure have, its already the dog days of summer, and historically hitters wilt in the August heat, not rejuvenate.

And if they dislike Kapler as much as I believe they do, they will be less inclined to go the extra mile, figuring they will be here a lot longer than he is.

Smyly looks for real, one bad pitch at the worst possible time, then he recovered and gave them 3 good innings and could have gone deeper. Nola, Smyly, Vargas, Arrieta, Velasquez isn't ideal, but if they had a deep bullpen they could win 90 games with that group, with the current bullpen, winning 85 will be an achievement - Neris, Pivetta and pray. Suarez and Alvarez are passable, but Morin, Parker, Nicasio, Eflin are long relievers at best.

They need the young kids to step up the next couple years, Harper can hit better but it may take a year or two for him to accept that swinging for the fences is counterproductive, Rhys is about as good as he's going to be, Realmuto is going to end up above .800 OPS, but Hernandez, Segura, Bruce/Dickerson/Cutch are what they are.

So any real improvement has to come from Kingery, Quinn, Bohm, Haseley, Moniak, Stott the next 2-3 years.

Uh huh. Just my opinion, but one of the characteristics of ballplayers who don't give their all because they don't like a particular manager is... they don't get to the major leagues. Ballplayers who let that kind of stuff bother them simply don't cut it.

Harper has been diving for every ball he can reach, and aggressively running the bases - doesn't seem unmotivated to me.
His issue as a hitter to me is he tries to do too much and over swings at times.

In any case, at some point this team is going to have win a few games that it is not supposed to win. If not on this road trip (where 3-3 would be the bare minimum of success) then against the Cubs, and, ultimately, against the Nats and Braves a month from now.
