Guerra with a disastrous appearance, including 3 run dinger by Urshela. Solid start by Arrieta likely for naught, tarp on field and rain falling. 6-1 Yankees after 6.

I don't imagine we were gonna get four runs against the Yankees bullpen, but serious bummer. Guerra was so good in the first game too.

I suspected trouble when Guerra started off with a walk and a HBP to put two on with no outs.

Arrieta did pretty good tonight, especially considering the hassles of this past week and not having pitched in a game since two weekends ago.

In a normal season, starting 1-3 would not be a huge deal, but this year is nothing like a normal season.

I wonder why we have not seen more of Morgan and Alvarez. I guess a double header on Wednesday is good news. Two seven inning games means four less innings for the bullpen.

Both teams will be into the bullpen. Good news to get Cole out of the game. Bad news is that the Yankee pen has been pretty good so far. Phillies bullpen has been horrendous so far.

Yeah tbh I thought our best chance might be to catch Cole for a few batters before they pulled him. With no game tomorrow Yankees don't have to spare any bullpen bullets (though with a five-run lead they also don't have to use them).

Watching the Sixers right now. Not sure they've trailed much all night, but could still blow it.

Arrieta showed his elbow is ok, 93 t94 on his two seamer, but his command was off, too many belt high over the plate and he paid for it.

I don't think he's a top 3 pitcher anymore unless he gets a lot sharper, but if Howard's ready, Arrieta and Eflin at #4 and #5 is a pretty good pair, hopefully with Ranger Saurez in the wings. I've given up on Velasquez and Pivetta as starting pitchers at this point.

I was at that point prior to the season, although I'd like to see VV out of the bullpen. I think he could make a decent closer.

We're gonna need Ranger in the pen, it appears. That's where he thrived last year anyway.

I was encouraged by Arrieta's outing. As AF said, decent velocity. He has always had movement that is hard to command and it is understandable he'd have some ups and downs in his first start after multiple delays against one of the best hitting teams in the league.

I have no idea what our rotation is behind Nola and Wheeler. Most likely it will be mix and match and going with the hot hand all year long. Tandem starts too if they keep the roster at 30. Remember Howard has not even started in AAA so I am not sure we should count on him. Someone like Velasquez was equally good in the minors. VV had a rough start but he also showed pretty well in the intrasquad and exhibition games to the degree that he gets another chance or two. He'll have a short leash, but Howard, Eflin, and Pivetta would too. Arrieta is the only one of our back end starters that will get a longer leash and even he will be expected to produce after a few more starts. The implosion from Cole Irvin makes the Suarez absence a little more pointed. We really need a LH 2-inning reliever to change around some lineups.

That was an epically bad inning from Irvin but it doesn't mean he won't still be able to help.

I suspect we're not going to be seeing any tandem starts per se. Just doesn't seem like Price or Girardi's style. Of course it is largely semantics - a 4-inning start followed by three innings of long relief pretty much looks the same. You just hope the former isn't planned (unless Howard or Eflin are on a low pitch count).

You don't want to mess with your ace's throwing schedule but it seems like it would have been better to have one of them for a nine-inning game. They need a sixth starter this week in any case so I'd sure rather see Howard than Irvin or Pivetta or De Los Santos (and presume Suarez isn't ready).
