I think we have seen repeatedly that Thomson is just very old-school about platoon advantages, and reverse splits are often not meaningful, even in larger samples. Of course neither are head-to-head match-ups.
Which is not to say I disagree purely with the defense argument.
But Cave has to play a little. Marsh is losing playing time too (when Bryce isn't at 1B).
